Sialkot International is the closest airport to Mirpur. Wikipedia records the distance as 110 km, against 130 km from Islamabad, and Mirpur has no airport of its own. If you have a choice of flights, this is the shorter drive and it is on the right side of the country for Kashmir.
It is also, in a real sense, an airport built for you. Sialkot International is the only privately owned airport in Pakistan, funded by the Sialkot business community through a company with 223 directors who each put in Rs 5 million of their own money. When it opened on 11 December 2007, Business Recorder described the case for it plainly: there are millions of expatriates belonging to this golden triangle who frequently come to their homes and go back. The travel advice for Azad Kashmir, before anything else
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and against all travel to within ten miles of the Line of Control. Checked against gov.uk on 1 September 2026.
We put that first because most of the people making this journey are British passport holders visiting family, and almost none of them know it. Two things follow. Most UK travel insurance is void for travel against FCDO advice, so a policy bought for a trip to Pakistan may not cover the part of the trip that is actually in Kashmir. And consular assistance is limited. Visiting family may well be essential travel in your own judgement; that judgement is yours to make, and it is easier to make before you have paid for anything.
None of this applies to Pakistani nationals or to AJK residents, and none of it is a legal bar on anyone. Read the advice yourself, ring your insurer, and then plan the journey.
The airport itself
It sits at Sambrial, 14 km west of Sialkot city, on a 3,600 by 45 metre runway rated ICAO Category 4E, with an apron that takes seven wide-body aircraft. It handled 939,899 passengers in the year to June 2025, up just over ten per cent, which makes it the sixth busiest airport in Pakistan. It is the hub of AirSial, the airline the Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry founded, and nine carriers use it: Emirates, Qatar Airways, flydubai, Air Arabia, flyadeal, SalamAir, Fly Jinnah, PIA and AirSial, serving the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
What that mix produces on the ground is a particular kind of arrival: late-night wide-body flights from the Gulf, full of families with the maximum baggage allowance, met by relatives who may be an hour away in another district. It is the reason a van is a more common answer here than a car.
The drive to Mirpur
We will be straight about what we can and cannot source for this leg. The 110 km figure comes from Wikipedia. A routing site gives about 117 km and roughly one hour fifty minutes of driving. No authority publishes the route composition for this journey, and we have not found a published toll for it, so we do not print one; tolls appear on the quote at the rate actually paid.
What we can tell you is the shape of it. The airport is on the Punjab plain and Mirpur is across the Jhelum river in Kashmir, so the drive leaves the industrial belt, crosses to the Grand Trunk Road corridor and turns for Mangla. Allow more than the routing estimate if you are landing at two in the morning with a family and a trolley of bags.
Where people are actually going
Rarely to Mirpur city itself. The Mangla Dam displaced more than 110,000 people in the 1960s and submerged the old towns of Mirpur and Dadyal; the raising project between 2004 and 2009 affected 40,000 more and built New Mirpur City together with four satellite towns, Islamgarh, Chakswari, Dadyal and Siakh. Those towns are where the family addresses are, they are separated by a reservoir, and the roads between them go round rather than across.
That is why the Rathoa Haryam bridge matters. At 7,181 metres it is reported as the longest bridge over any reservoir in South Asia, it links Mirpur with Islamgarh, its foundation stone was laid on 22 October 2024, and the final section was reported as due around the middle of 2026. Until it opens, a Mirpur to Islamgarh trip is a long way round.

Do you meet flights arriving after midnight?
Yes. Most of the Gulf wide-bodies into Sialkot are night arrivals. Send the flight number and scheduled time and the driver will be inside arrivals with your name.
What vehicle will we need?
Count the cases, not the seats. A family of six arriving from Jeddah or Dubai with full checked baggage does not fit a seven-seat SUV, because the third row takes the boot. A Grand Cabin carries thirteen passengers plus the driver and is the usual answer here.
What is the toll?

Can you also do the return to the airport at the end of the trip?
