Multan is an easy city to drive and a demanding one to plan for, and the reason is the weather rather than the roads. The airport is four kilometres west of the city, the shortest airport transfer in Pakistan, and the Cantonment railway station is under three kilometres away. Distances inside the city are modest. What varies is the season.
Two seasons, two different problems
Summer is the more visible one. Average June maxima sit around 46 degrees, the record is 51 degrees set on 27 May 2010, violent dust storms peak in May and June and the monsoon runs from June to September. None of that stops a car, but it changes what a competent transfer looks like: working air conditioning, a vehicle that has not been standing in full sun with a family about to get into it, and a driver who does not leave elderly passengers waiting outside a terminal.
Winter is the one that actually breaks plans. Multan fog settles for anything from three days to several weeks and sometimes closes the airport outright in dense conditions. December and January flights genuinely divert, usually to Lahore, and a family standing at Multan airport waiting for an aircraft that has landed 340 km away has a problem the airline does not solve for them.
Plan the diversion before it happens
If you are flying into Multan between December and February, send us the flight number and tell us in advance where you would want to be taken if the aircraft goes to Lahore. Deciding it beforehand costs nothing and avoids the worst version of that conversation at one in the morning.
The hinge of the southern motorway network
Multan is better connected by road than most people expect, which is why a diversion is a drive rather than a lost day. The M-4 runs 309 km north to Pindi Bhattian via Faisalabad, connecting into the Lahore and Islamabad corridors without touching the GT Road, and the M-5 runs 392 km south to Sukkur. Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahim Yar Khan are all routine onward journeys from here.
That position is also why Multan works well as a base for southern Punjab rather than as a stop on the way to somewhere else. Multi-day hire with the same driver is common here for exactly that reason.
Around the city
The shrines are the reason most visitors come: Shah Rukn-e-Alam, Bahauddin Zakariya, Shah Shams Tabriz, along with the Fort area and the walled city bazaars. They are close together by the standards of Lahore or Karachi, which makes a half-day of waiting hire more sensible than a sequence of separate rides, particularly in summer when standing outside between stops is the part you want to minimise.
Local ground transport is Metro Radio Cab, car rental, auto-rickshaws and over four hundred parking spaces at the airport. Street taxis are negotiated rather than metered and their fares rose roughly twenty per cent in March 2026 after the fuel increase. Uber and Careem do not operate ride-hailing anywhere in Pakistan.

Multan is the hinge of the southern motorway network, which is why so many journeys from here are intercity rather than local. In December and January the fog is the thing to plan around: it grounds flights, and the road to Lahore on the M-4 and M-3 becomes the contingency.

Is there a train option?
Multan Cantonment station is under three kilometres from the airport, so rail works as an onward connection. Online booking with Pakistan Railways needs a Pakistani national ID number and a Pakistani-issued card.
Can you meet a late-night Gulf arrival?
Yes. Send the flight number and scheduled arrival. Most of the international traffic here is Gulf sectors landing late with heavy luggage.
