Mirpur has no airport. It is the single most important fact about getting there, and it is why this journey exists at all. The nearest options are Islamabad International, which Wikipedia records as 130 km away, and Sialkot International at 110 km. Everyone arriving to see family in Mirpur lands at one of the two and drives the rest.

Islamabad is the one most UK flights use, and it is also the more awkward of the two, because the airport is 25 km southwest of Islamabad, on the far side of the city from Kashmir. The drive starts by crossing the whole capital region before it even reaches the Grand Trunk Road.

The travel advice for Azad Kashmir, before anything else

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and against all travel to within ten miles of the Line of Control. Checked against gov.uk on 1 September 2026.

We put that first because most of the people making this journey are British passport holders visiting family, and almost none of them know it. Two things follow. Most UK travel insurance is void for travel against FCDO advice, so a policy bought for a trip to Pakistan may not cover the part of the trip that is actually in Kashmir. And consular assistance is limited. Visiting family may well be essential travel in your own judgement; that judgement is yours to make, and it is easier to make before you have paid for anything.

None of this applies to Pakistani nationals or to AJK residents, and none of it is a legal bar on anyone. Read the advice yourself, ring your insurer, and then plan the journey.

The road, and the town that decides it

There is no motorway to Mirpur and no national highway designated to it. Mirpur is linked to the Peshawar–Lahore Grand Trunk Road at Dina, in Jhelum District, and that junction is the whole route in one word. From the airport the drive runs on the Srinagar Highway to Zero Point, down the Islamabad Expressway, which covers 28 km to Rawat where it meets the N-5, and then southeast along the GT Road to Dina. At Dina you turn for Mangla and Mirpur.

Dina is also the answer to a question people ask constantly: there is no railway station in Mirpur, and the closest one is at Dina. If someone has told you to take the train to Mirpur, they mean the train to Dina and a car from there.

We do not publish a driving time for this route as a fact, because no authority publishes one. A routing site puts it at about one hour forty minutes; that is a third-party estimate for a car in clear conditions and it is not what a family with four suitcases experiences after a long-haul flight. Two to two and a half hours door to door is the honest planning assumption, and your driver will tell you on the day.

Why there are so many of you

This is not a coincidence of migration. When Mangla Dam was built in the 1960s it submerged over 280 villages and the towns of Mirpur and Dadyal, and displaced more than 110,000 people. Some of those displaced received work permits for Britain, and the community that grew from them is now around 747,000 people, roughly seventy per cent of the entire British Pakistani population, concentrated in Bradford, Birmingham and the northern cities. Mirpur is nicknamed Little England for a reason, and many shops in the city will take pounds sterling.

The dam was raised again between 2004 and 2009, affecting more than 40,000 further people at a resettlement cost of around Rs 70 billion. That programme built New Mirpur City and four satellite towns: Islamgarh, Chakswari, Dadyal and Siakh, plus the Mirpur Bypass and two bridges. If your family address is in one of those, it exists because of the water.

What is changing on this route

Two pieces of construction will alter this journey, and neither is finished, so we describe them as what they are rather than as improvements you can rely on.

The Rathoa Haryam bridge across the Mangla reservoir, linking Mirpur with Islamgarh, is 7,181 metres long and is described in reporting as the longest bridge over any reservoir in South Asia. Its foundation stone was laid on 22 October 2024, it is being built by the Frontier Works Organisation, and the last stretch was reported as due for completion around the middle of 2026. When it opens it shortens the runs from Mirpur to Islamgarh, Chakswari and Kotli considerably.

The M-13 Kharian to Rawalpindi motorway, 117 km with eight interchanges, has been under construction since September 2022 and includes a bridge over the Jhelum and twin-tube tunnels through the Salt Range between Dina and Sohawa. When that opens, the Islamabad to Dina leg stops being a GT Road journey. It is not open, so today it changes nothing.

Tell us the actual village

“Mirpur” covers a district, not an address. New Mirpur City, Islamgarh, Chakswari, Dadyal and the villages around them are separated by the reservoir and by roads that go the long way round. Give us the village or the sector and the nearest landmark, and give us the flight number, and the car will be sized and routed for the real journey.

Enter your exact pickup address and Pakistan-local time to see the fare and book. You pay at secure checkout, and your card is only charged once the vehicle and driver are confirmed.

Against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, checked 1 September 2026

Before you plan this journey UK Foreign Office advice, checked 1 September 2026, advises against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and against ALL travel to within ten miles of the Line of Control. That is advice to British nationals, not a legal bar, and it does not apply to Pakistani nationals or AJK residents - but travel against FCDO advice could invalidate your travel insurance, so check your policy before you fly rather than after.

Every way of making this journey

We are one row in this table, and not the cheapest one. Use these reference options to compare a current offer for your own journey.

Option Typical cost Time What to know
Flying to Mirpur — — Not an option. Mirpur has no airport and has never had one.
Sialkot airport instead — — 110 km rather than 130 km and on the Kashmir side of the country, but far fewer UK flights.
Train — — No station in Mirpur. The nearest is Dina, and you still need a car from there.
Airport taxi rank — — Negotiated at the kerb. No Pakistani airport publishes a tariff, and it needs local cash and a working phone.
iDrive.pk, car with a driver Rs 14,000 to Rs 52,000 — The accepted fare covers the agreed journey and stated inclusions. Once assigned, review the driver photograph and vehicle registration, confirm the meeting instructions, and do not board a different vehicle. Check passenger and luggage fit against the approved vehicle details.

Comparison reference date: September 1, 2026. These figures are not a current offer. Check the operator’s current fare, timetable, booking requirements and inclusions before travel.

Which vehicle actually fits

These model examples do not confirm the capacity or availability of a particular vehicle. Give the passenger count and the number and size of bags, and check the approved vehicle variation before confirmation.

  • Suzuki WagonR 3 passengers, 2 cases Short city transfers on a budget. The tall boot helps more than the engine does.
  • Toyota Yaris or Corolla 3 to 4 passengers, 2 to 3 large cases The workhorse. City work, airport transfers and the motorway run between Lahore and Islamabad.
  • Honda BR-V 5 passengers with luggage, or 7 with almost none Family airport transfers on paved routes. The third row eats the boot, so it suits children or short hops rather than seven adults with cases. Not a mountain vehicle.
  • Toyota Fortuner 5 passengers with full luggage, 7 travelling light For a mountain itinerary, confirm the actual vehicle variation, drivetrain and current route suitability before booking.
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 4 to 5 passengers with full luggage Confirm the actual vehicle variation, passenger and luggage fit, and current route suitability before booking.
  • Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin 13 passengers plus the driver The group and family vehicle. Gulf arrivals into Sialkot and Peshawar with heavy luggage, tour groups, weddings, long intercity runs.
  • Toyota Coaster 25 to 29 passengers with hold luggage For a group journey, confirm the actual vehicle capacity and whether the accepted fare includes tolls.

How booking works

  1. 01 Tell us the journey Where from, where to, when, how many of you and how much luggage. Precise addresses matter more than you would think, because a Rawalpindi address and an Islamabad address twenty minutes apart are very different journeys.
  2. 02 Review the fare or quote Where offered, online fares and written quotes show the journey and vehicle class they cover. Check tolls, waiting time and extras before you confirm.
  3. 03 Check your confirmed details Keep your booking reference or written quote. Confirm the vehicle, driver where applicable, and pickup or collection instructions before travel.
  4. 04 You travel Follow the confirmed meeting or collection instructions. Check the vehicle and, where a driver is provided, their identity before starting.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an airport at Mirpur?

No. Mirpur has no airport of its own. Islamabad International is recorded as 130 km away and Sialkot International as 110 km, and every arriving visitor drives from one of the two.

How far is Islamabad airport from Mirpur?

Wikipedia records 130 km. A routing site gives about 136 km by road and roughly one hour forty minutes of driving; that is a third-party estimate rather than an authority figure, and door to door with luggage it is realistically two to two and a half hours.

Which airport is better for Mirpur, Islamabad or Sialkot?

Sialkot is closer at 110 km against 130 km, and it sits on the right side of the country for Kashmir. Islamabad has far more UK flights. Most people are choosing a flight rather than an airport, so tell us which one you have booked and we will plan from there.

What route does the driver take?

Srinagar Highway to Zero Point, then the Islamabad Expressway for 28 km to Rawat where it joins the N-5, then the Grand Trunk Road southeast to Dina, then the road for Mangla and Mirpur. Mirpur connects to the GT Road at Dina; there is no motorway to it.

Is there a train to Mirpur?

No. There is no railway station in Mirpur and the closest one is at Dina, which is why the Dina junction matters so much on this route.

What does the UK government say about travelling to Azad Kashmir?

It advises against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and against all travel within ten miles of the Line of Control. Checked on 1 September 2026. It is advice to British nationals rather than a legal bar and does not apply to Pakistani nationals or AJK residents.

Will my travel insurance still be valid?

Check with your insurer before you fly. Most UK policies are void for travel against FCDO advice, and a policy bought for Pakistan may not cover the Kashmir part of the trip. We cannot advise on insurance, but we would rather you asked the question early.

Can you take us on to Dadyal, Chakswari, Islamgarh or Kotli?

Yes. These are separate towns around the Mangla reservoir and the roads between them are not short, so tell us the destination rather than just “Mirpur” and we will plan and price the real journey.

What is the toll on this route?

We have not been able to verify a current published toll for the Grand Trunk Road section or for the Kashmir roads, so we do not print a figure. Tolls are folded into the fixed price you’re shown before you pay, even on routes where the toll authority hasn’t published an official rate. For context, the National Highway Authority raised the general national-highway car rate to Rs 100 with effect from 10 July 2026.

Can you meet a night flight?

Yes, and most flights from the UK arrive at unsociable hours. Send the flight number and the scheduled arrival time and the driver will be inside arrivals with your name.

How much luggage can you take?

Tell us the number of cases rather than the number of people. Families visiting from Britain routinely arrive with more baggage than a saloon car will hold, and a Grand Cabin, which carries thirteen passengers plus the driver, is a common answer on this route.

Is the price fixed?

Yes, the moment you pay, for the journey as described including the destination village you gave us.

Tell us the journey and we will price it

Send the route, date, passenger count and luggage details. We will show an available live price or prepare a quote with the vehicle class and terms it assumes. Check the final offer before confirming; if the journey is unavailable, we will tell you.
