Indicative only. The figure we quote for your journey is the one that counts, and once quoted it does not change. What moves a price: the exact addresses at each end, the vehicle the party and luggage actually need, whether the car waits or returns empty, and the motorway toll where one applies.
Karachi to Hyderabad is the shortest of the major intercity runs and one of the few in Pakistan where the drive is unambiguously the right answer. The M-9 is 136 km of six-lane motorway; door to door the journey works out at roughly 165 km and takes about two and a half hours. The speed limit is 120 km/h for light vehicles and 80 km/h for heavy ones, and motorcycles and pedestrians are banned outright.
What makes the journey unpredictable is not the motorway. It is Karachi.
Getting out of Karachi
Almost every journey out of the city touches Shahrah-e-Faisal at some point, an 18 km artery carrying around 250,000 vehicles a day and identified in cited injury research as the city’s deadliest road. Congestion peaks between 07:00 and 09:00 and again between 16:00 and 19:00, and the difference between those windows and the middle of the day is the difference between a two-and-a-half-hour journey and a three-and-a-half-hour one. Rickshaws have been banned from twenty-five major roads including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Shahrah-e-Quaideen and Korangi Road under Section 144, so on the main corridors the realistic choices are a car or a motorcycle.
If you are starting from DHA or Clifton, the run to the motorway is itself a substantial part of the journey. Give the full pickup address rather than a district name, and if the departure falls inside a peak window, expect the driver to propose leaving earlier.
The M-9, honestly described
The M-9 is a good road by the standards of the alternative, and a poor one by the standards of the M-2. Its published shortcomings are a matter of record: uneven pavement quality, incomplete fencing, basic lane markings without reflective markers, and no service areas comparable to those on Pakistan’s other motorways. There are four interchanges, at Dadabhai, Industrial Valley, Nooriabad and Thana Bola Khan, and Nooriabad is the customary tea stop and effectively the only one. The toll plaza at the Karachi end is the largest in Pakistan at twenty-four lanes and opened in December 2020.
We do not publish a toll figure for the M-9 because we have not been able to verify a current one from an authority, and a stale toll is worse than none. It appears on the quote as a line item at the rate actually paid.
The alternatives, and why they are weak here
Rail looks attractive on paper and is awkward in practice. Several trains call at Hyderabad, but the pattern is set by the long-haul schedule rather than by this city pair: the Khyber Mail, for instance, leaves Karachi at 22:15 and reaches Hyderabad at 00:40. That is a journey of about two hours twenty-five minutes that deposits you in a different city at half past midnight. Pakistan Railways also raised fares by five per cent on economy and ten per cent on air-conditioned classes for tickets booked from 9 March 2026, and online booking requires a Pakistani national ID number and a Pakistani-issued card.
Coach fares for this route are the one place in our research where we found third-party sources so far apart that we will not quote either. Two of the best-known fare-list sites disagree by roughly a factor of eight for the same 165 km hop, which means at least one of them is simply wrong. Buses do run this corridor frequently and cheaply; we would rather tell you to check a live booking engine than repeat a figure we cannot stand behind.
The benchmark we can quote is inDrive’s City to City recommendation of about Rs 2,600 for Karachi to Hyderabad, which is a one-way negotiated price for an unvetted driver with no return leg included.
Time the departure around the peaks
The motorway section is stable at around two and a half hours. The Karachi section is not. Leaving between 07:00 and 09:00 or between 16:00 and 19:00 can add an hour before you have reached the M-9 at all.
Tell us the journey and we will price it. A submitted request is not a booking until availability, price and terms are confirmed.
The journey in figures
- Distance
- The M-9 is 136 km; about 165 km door to door
- Drive time
- About 2 hours 30 minutes
- Road
- M-9 motorway, six lanes, 120 km/h for cars
- Where drivers stop
- Nooriabad is the customary tea stop
The M-9 is honestly the roughest of the motorways on this list: pavement quality is uneven, fencing is incomplete, lane markings are not reflective and there are no service areas comparable to the M-2. Motorcycles and pedestrians are banned from it.
Every way of making this journey
We are one row in this table, and not the cheapest one. Here is what the alternatives actually cost and what each of them asks of you.
| Option | Typical cost | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus, Daewoo Express | Rs 740 | About 2 h 30 m | Third-party fare list. Terminal to terminal. |
| Train | — | About 2 h 25 m | Khyber Mail leaves Karachi at 22:15 and reaches Hyderabad at 00:40. Barely faster than the road and it lands in the middle of the night. We could not verify a current class fare. |
| inDrive City to City | Rs 2,600 | About 2 h 30 m | One way, negotiated. |
| iDrive.pk, car with a driver | Rs 13,500 to Rs 31,000 | — | A fixed price once quoted, a vetted driver whose photo and vehicle registration you see before the journey, and a car sized to your party and luggage. Booked before you travel, so it does not depend on having a local SIM when you land. |
Costs for other operators checked on August 31, 2026 and published from their own booking systems, official notices or named third-party sources. Fuel in Pakistan moved from Rs 264.61 a litre in September 2025 to Rs 343.10 by August 2026, so fares here move quickly. Treat these as a guide and confirm with the operator.
Which vehicle actually fits
Seat counts are the manufacturer figures. The passenger and luggage numbers beside them are what the vehicle carries in practice, with the cases people really travel with. If your party is near the limit, tell us the number of bags rather than the number of people, because that is what decides it.
- Suzuki WagonR 3 passengers, 2 cases Short city transfers on a budget. The tall boot helps more than the engine does.
- Toyota Yaris or Corolla 3 to 4 passengers, 2 to 3 large cases The workhorse. City work, airport transfers and the motorway run between Lahore and Islamabad.
- Honda BR-V 5 passengers with luggage, or 7 with almost none Family airport transfers on paved routes. The third row eats the boot, so it suits children or short hops rather than seven adults with cases. Not a mountain vehicle.
- Toyota Fortuner 5 passengers with full luggage, 7 travelling light Rough road and mountain work: Skardu, Hunza, Naran, Babusar. Ask for the diesel four-wheel-drive, because the petrol version is two-wheel-drive.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 4 to 5 passengers with full luggage Protocol and expedition work, and a genuine choice for Skardu and Deosai. It returns 5 to 10 km a litre, which at Rs 343 a litre is the honest reason it costs what it costs.
- Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin 13 passengers plus the driver The group and family vehicle. Gulf arrivals into Sialkot and Peshawar with heavy luggage, tour groups, weddings, long intercity runs.
- Toyota Coaster 25 to 29 passengers with hold luggage Large groups, corporate shuttles and pilgrimage travel. Worth knowing that the motorway toll alone is Rs 3,350 each way against Rs 1,430 for a car.
How booking works
- 01 Tell us the journey Where from, where to, when, how many of you and how much luggage. Precise addresses matter more than you would think, because a Rawalpindi address and an Islamabad address twenty minutes apart are very different journeys.
- 02 We quote a fixed price One figure for the whole journey, with the vehicle class it assumes. If a motorway toll or a waiting period is part of it, you see that too.
- 03 You see the driver and the car Before the journey you get the driver photograph and the vehicle registration, so you know exactly who and what you are looking for.
- 04 You travel At an airport your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign. Check the photograph and the registration plate against what we sent you before you get in.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Karachi to Hyderabad?
The M-9 motorway itself is 136 km. Door to door, including both city ends, the journey is closer to 165 km and takes about two and a half hours.
What is the speed limit on the M-9?
120 km/h for light vehicles and 80 km/h for heavy vehicles. Motorcycles and pedestrians are not permitted on the motorway.
Where can we stop on the way?
Nooriabad is the customary tea stop and effectively the only established one. The M-9 does not have service areas comparable to Pakistan’s other motorways, so plan a stop rather than assuming one will appear.
What is the M-9 toll?
We do not publish a figure because we have not verified a current rate from an authority. It appears on your quote as a line item at the rate actually paid. The Karachi-end plaza is the largest in Pakistan, with twenty-four lanes, and opened in December 2020.
Is the train a better option?
Rarely. Trains that call at Hyderabad are running long-haul schedules, so the timings suit the route rather than the city pair. The Khyber Mail leaves Karachi at 22:15 and arrives at 00:40. The saving in journey time over the motorway is negligible.
Why do bus fares for this route vary so much online?
Because the widely-indexed fare-list sites are not operator sites and at least one of them is carrying a bad figure. Two of them differ by roughly a factor of eight for this 165 km route. Check a live booking engine rather than a fare list.
When is the worst time to leave Karachi?
Between 07:00 and 09:00 and between 16:00 and 19:00. Those are the city’s congestion peaks and they can add an hour to the journey before you reach the motorway.
Can you collect from DHA or Clifton?
Yes. Give the full address rather than the district, because the run from the southern districts to the motorway is a significant part of the total journey.
Can we make it a return trip in one day?
Yes. Two and a half hours each way makes a same-day return realistic, subject to a safe driver duty period and a confirmed waiting arrangement at the Hyderabad end.
Do you carry on to Sukkur or beyond?
Yes. South of Hyderabad the M-5 runs 392 km to Sukkur. Tell us the final destination rather than booking the legs separately, so the vehicle and the driver hours are planned for the whole journey.
Will I know the driver before pickup?
Yes. We send the driver’s photograph and the vehicle registration before the car arrives.
Is the price fixed?
Yes, once quoted and accepted, for the journey as described. Changes to route, stops or timing are requoted rather than added at the end.
Tell us the journey and we will price it
Send the route, the date, the number of travelling and how many cases you have. You will get one price for the whole journey and the vehicle class it assumes. If we cannot cover it properly we will say so rather than take the booking.
