Self-drive rental exists in Pakistan and we will arrange it where it is appropriate. But we would rather begin with the honest position, which is that it is the minority product in this market and that for most visitors, and particularly for most first-time visitors, it is not the right choice.
The reasons are practical rather than dramatic. Addresses in the older cities are not laid out for satellite navigation. Local driving conventions differ substantially from European or Gulf norms and, in the UK government’s own description of Pakistan, local driving standards are erratic, particularly at night. Outside the major motorways, road quality is variable. And in mountainous regions the standing advice is to use experienced local drivers, which is exactly the part self-drive removes.
Where self-drive does make sense
There are cases where it is a reasonable request, and they have a shape. A resident or a returning Pakistani who already drives here and simply needs a vehicle. A long stay where a car is needed on an unpredictable schedule. City and motorway use rather than hill or northern routes. Somebody who has driven in the country before and knows what they are taking on.
Where we will steer you away from it: the northern routes, the Murree road in winter, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where permits and current advice apply, and any itinerary where a driver’s local knowledge is doing the safety work. On those we would rather lose the booking than take it.
What we confirm before a self-drive booking is final
We do not publish a list of requirements on this page, and that is deliberate: rental conditions in Pakistan vary by supplier and change, and a stale list would be worse than none. What we do is confirm all of it with the supplier in writing before your booking becomes final, and set it out in the quote.
- The driver’s minimum age and licensing requirements for your specific licence and nationality.
- Whether an International Driving Permit or any additional documentation is required alongside your national licence.
- The security deposit, how it is held and when it is released.
- The insurance position: what is covered, what the excess is, and what is excluded.
- Mileage limits and any restriction on which cities or regions the vehicle may be taken to.
- Fuel policy, cross-border restrictions and what happens in the event of a breakdown.
If any of those come back in a form you are not comfortable with, you have not committed to anything. A submitted request is not a booking until availability, price and terms are confirmed.
The alternative, put fairly
A chauffeur-driven vehicle in Pakistan costs less relative to a self-drive rental than the same comparison in Europe, because the driver is not the expensive part of the equation here. What you get for the difference is somebody who knows the junctions, can talk to a traffic officer, will find a Rawalpindi address that is not on a map, and takes the parking problem away entirely. For a visitor on a two-week trip, that is usually the better purchase.

We will tell you when self-drive is the wrong answer
If you ask us for a self-drive vehicle for a northern itinerary, or for Murree in January, we will say so and explain why. That is not us protecting a margin. It is the same judgement we apply when we refuse a fourteen-hour single-day drive.

Which vehicle actually fits
Seat counts are the manufacturer figures. The passenger and luggage numbers beside them are what the vehicle carries in practice, with the cases people really travel with. If your party is near the limit, tell us the number of bags rather than the number of people, because that is what decides it.
- Suzuki WagonR 3 passengers, 2 cases Short city transfers on a budget. The tall boot helps more than the engine does.
- Toyota Yaris or Corolla 3 to 4 passengers, 2 to 3 large cases The workhorse. City work, airport transfers and the motorway run between Lahore and Islamabad.
- Honda BR-V 5 passengers with luggage, or 7 with almost none Family airport transfers on paved routes. The third row eats the boot, so it suits children or short hops rather than seven adults with cases. Not a mountain vehicle.
- Toyota Fortuner 5 passengers with full luggage, 7 travelling light Rough road and mountain work: Skardu, Hunza, Naran, Babusar. Ask for the diesel four-wheel-drive, because the petrol version is two-wheel-drive.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 4 to 5 passengers with full luggage Protocol and expedition work, and a genuine choice for Skardu and Deosai. It returns 5 to 10 km a litre, which at Rs 343 a litre is the honest reason it costs what it costs.
- Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin 13 passengers plus the driver The group and family vehicle. Gulf arrivals into Sialkot and Peshawar with heavy luggage, tour groups, weddings, long intercity runs.
- Toyota Coaster 25 to 29 passengers with hold luggage Large groups, corporate shuttles and pilgrimage travel. Worth knowing that the motorway toll alone is Rs 3,350 each way against Rs 1,430 for a car.

- 01 Tell us the journey Where from, where to, when, how many of you and how much luggage. Precise addresses matter more than you would think, because a Rawalpindi address and an Islamabad address twenty minutes apart are very different journeys.
- 02 We quote a fixed price One figure for the whole journey, with the vehicle class it assumes. If a motorway toll or a waiting period is part of it, you see that too.
- 03 You see the driver and the car Before the journey you get the driver photograph and the vehicle registration, so you know exactly who and what you are looking for.
- 04 You travel At an airport your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign. Check the photograph and the registration plate against what we sent you before you get in.

Can I take a self-drive car to the northern areas?
We will generally advise against it and may decline to arrange it. The northern routes are where local driving knowledge does the safety work, and UK government advice for Pakistan specifically recommends experienced local drivers in mountainous regions.
Can I drive to Murree in winter?
Not on a self-drive basis, in our view. Access to Murree is capped or shut once the town reaches capacity in the snow season, snow chains are advised, and the Murree Expressway was closed outright after heavy snowfall on 1 January 2026.
Is self-drive cheaper than hiring a driver?
Less than you might expect. The driver is not the expensive part of the equation in Pakistan. Ask us to quote both for your actual itinerary and we will give you the comparison.
What happens if the car breaks down?
The supplier’s breakdown arrangements are stated in the quote, including who to contact and what the recovery position is.
Can I take the car across a border?
Cross-border use is restricted and is confirmed with the supplier before booking. Do not assume it is permitted.
How far in advance should I request self-drive?
Further ahead than a chauffeur booking, because the documentation has to be checked and confirmed with the supplier before anything is final.
Is the quoted price fixed?
The hire price is fixed once quoted and accepted, for the rental as described. Deposits, excess and fuel policy are separate and are stated explicitly in the same quote.
