Islamabad to Mingora is about 247 km and four to five hours, on the M-1 as far as the Karnal Sher Khan interchange and then the M-16 Swat Expressway. It is a genuinely good road, which is recent news: the Nowshera to Chakdara section opened to traffic on 3 June 2019 and replaced a route through Mardan and Malakand that took considerably longer.
The expressway passes Swabi, Mardan and Malakand and includes tunnels. The place where the time goes is the Malakand Tunnel and Dargai, particularly at weekends when Swat traffic from Peshawar and the twin cities converges. A second phase, Chakdara to Fatehpur, 79 km further on past Mingora and Malam Jabba, was approved in March 2021. We do not describe it as open, because we have not confirmed that it is.
The travel advice for Swat, stated plainly
This matters more than the road, and it is stronger than most people expect. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel to Swat. Swat is named individually in its Khyber Pakhtunkhwa list, alongside Peshawar, Buner, Upper and Lower Dir and the former tribal districts. Neighbouring Malakand, Shangla, Mardan, Nowshera and Swabi carry the lighter advice against all but essential travel, and the M-16 route passes through Malakand, Mardan and Swabi to reach the valley. That is the British government’s assessment for British nationals. It is not a legal bar and it says nothing about Pakistani nationals or residents, for whom Swat is an ordinary domestic destination and one of the most visited places in the country. But if you hold a foreign passport it has two practical consequences: most UK travel insurance is void against FCDO advice, and your own government may not be able to help you there. Read the advice yourself, check your insurer, and decide before you plan a journey around it rather than after.
We will tell you plainly which journeys in this province we are willing to drive and which we are not, and we would rather have that conversation at the quote stage than at the roadside.
What the road is like
Motorway standard as far as Chakdara, then ordinary roads onward into the valley. The FCDO’s general observation about Pakistan applies from that point: outside the major motorways road quality is variable, and local driving standards are erratic, particularly at night. Its recommendation for mountainous regions is to use experienced local drivers, which is a fair description of what this journey needs beyond Mingora.
Beyond Mingora the usual destinations are Kalam, Malam Jabba and Bahrain, and those are mountain roads with their own seasonal character rather than continuations of the expressway. Kalam in particular should be treated as a separate leg with its own timing. Snow closes upper Swat in winter, and the sensible vehicle for the valley in cold months is not the sensible vehicle for the expressway.
Third-party sources put the motorway toll for this route at roughly Rs 800 to Rs 1,000. We have not verified that against an authority, so it is shown as a line item on the quote at the rate actually paid rather than published here as a fixed figure.
Weekends and the Malakand Tunnel
The four-to-five-hour figure is a weekday figure. At weekends, congestion builds at the Malakand Tunnel and around Dargai, and in the summer season the whole corridor carries holiday traffic into the valley. If your timing is fixed, travel early.

Costs for other operators checked on August 31, 2026 and published from their own booking systems, official notices or named third-party sources. Fuel in Pakistan moved from Rs 264.61 a litre in September 2025 to Rs 343.10 by August 2026, so fares here move quickly. Treat these as a guide and confirm with the operator.

Seat counts are the manufacturer figures. The passenger and luggage numbers beside them are what the vehicle carries in practice, with the cases people really travel with. If your party is near the limit, tell us the number of bags rather than the number of people, because that is what decides it.

Yes, but treat those as separate legs with their own timing and their own vehicle requirement. They are mountain roads, not extensions of the expressway.

Is winter travel possible?

Coaches run Islamabad to Swat and third-party fare lists put them in the region of Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,200. Those lists are not operator sites, so treat the figures as indicative and check a live booking engine.
Can the same driver stay with us for several days in the valley?
Yes. Multi-day hire with a driver who stays with the vehicle is the usual arrangement for Swat and it is the one we would recommend. Tell us the itinerary and the number of days.
Will you tell me if you are not willing to drive somewhere?
Yes, and we would rather say so at the quote stage than at the roadside. There are destinations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa we will decline.
