Islamabad and Rawalpindi are one urban area and two completely different driving problems. Islamabad is a planned sector grid where an address such as F-6, G-11 or H-8 is effectively a coordinate, the roads are wide and the traffic behaves. Rawalpindi, immediately next door, is dense, old and unplanned, and the same nominal distance through Saddar or Raja Bazaar can take twice as long.
Almost every visitor underestimates that boundary. A day that looks like six short hops on a map turns into three hops and two crossings, and the crossings are where the time goes.
Getting the address right
For Islamabad, the sector and street number are enough and any competent driver will find them cold. For Rawalpindi, give a landmark and the nearest main road alongside the address. It is not a formality: the older cantonment and bazaar streets are not laid out for satellite navigation, and the difference between a good instruction and a vague one is fifteen or twenty minutes per stop.
The same applies to the outer developments. Bahria Town, Gulberg Greens, DHA Islamabad and the developments along the Islamabad Expressway are a long way out compared with the sector grid, and we do not publish distances for them because we have not measured them ourselves and could not find a citable figure. What exists in the twin cities besides us
The app market here is inDrive, Yango and Bykea. Uber has not operated in Pakistan since 30 April 2024 and Careem stopped ride-hailing on 18 July 2025, so anything you read recommending either is stale. inDrive works by the passenger naming a price and drivers accepting or countering, which means there is no published car tariff to compare against; the fare examples inDrive does publish for Islamabad and Rawalpindi are motorcycle rates, around Rs 90 for four kilometres and Rs 280 for twenty.
Street taxis are almost all black with a yellow painted roof, negotiated rather than metered, and their fares rose by roughly twenty per cent in March 2026 after the fuel increase. The Metrobus network, Red, Blue and Orange lines together, runs from 06:15 to 22:00 and is genuinely good if your journey happens to match a line and you are not carrying anything.
Driver registration, and why it exists
Since 10 February 2026 the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad has required every ride-hailing driver across Bykea, inDrive and Yango to register through the City Islamabad app with a CNIC and vehicle registration, and to display an issued QR code on the windscreen so passengers can verify the driver by scanning it. Non-compliance carries penalties. A city does not legislate about this unless it has a reason to.
Our version of the same idea is simpler: you get the driver’s photograph and the vehicle registration before the car arrives, every time, whether it is an airport run or a half-day of meetings.
Half-day and full-day hire
Most of what we are asked for in the twin cities is not a point-to-point ride. It is a car and driver for a morning of meetings, a day of embassy and ministry appointments, a family visiting relatives across both cities, or a visitor doing Faisal Mosque, Daman-e-Koh, Saidpur Village and Rawalpindi’s bazaars in one day. Booked as separate rides, that is a day of waiting for cars. Booked as hire, it is one vehicle, one driver and one fixed price.
Tell us the shape of the day rather than the individual legs, including where you want the car to wait and for how long. If the plan changes on the day, we requote rather than adjusting the figure at the end.
The Metrobus stops at 22:00
The whole network, including the Orange Line to the airport, runs 06:15 to 22:00. Late arrivals, late meetings and late flights have no transit option in Islamabad, which is worth knowing before you plan an evening around it.

Costs for other operators checked on August 31, 2026 and published from their own booking systems, official notices or named third-party sources. Fuel in Pakistan moved from Rs 264.61 a litre in September 2025 to Rs 343.10 by August 2026, so fares here move quickly. Treat these as a guide and confirm with the operator.
Which vehicle actually fits
Seat counts are the manufacturer figures. The passenger and luggage numbers beside them are what the vehicle carries in practice, with the cases people really travel with. If your party is near the limit, tell us the number of bags rather than the number of people, because that is what decides it.
- Suzuki WagonR 3 passengers, 2 cases Short city transfers on a budget. The tall boot helps more than the engine does.
- Toyota Yaris or Corolla 3 to 4 passengers, 2 to 3 large cases The workhorse. City work, airport transfers and the motorway run between Lahore and Islamabad.
- Honda BR-V 5 passengers with luggage, or 7 with almost none Family airport transfers on paved routes. The third row eats the boot, so it suits children or short hops rather than seven adults with cases. Not a mountain vehicle.
- Toyota Fortuner 5 passengers with full luggage, 7 travelling light Rough road and mountain work: Skardu, Hunza, Naran, Babusar. Ask for the diesel four-wheel-drive, because the petrol version is two-wheel-drive.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 4 to 5 passengers with full luggage Protocol and expedition work, and a genuine choice for Skardu and Deosai. It returns 5 to 10 km a litre, which at Rs 343 a litre is the honest reason it costs what it costs.
- Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin 13 passengers plus the driver The group and family vehicle. Gulf arrivals into Sialkot and Peshawar with heavy luggage, tour groups, weddings, long intercity runs.
- Toyota Coaster 25 to 29 passengers with hold luggage Large groups, corporate shuttles and pilgrimage travel. Worth knowing that the motorway toll alone is Rs 3,350 each way against Rs 1,430 for a car.
