If you want to rent a car at Islamabad airport, you have three workable options, and the one most people pick first is not always the best. Airport delivery puts a self-drive car in the ISB car park when you land. Branch collection means you get yourself into Islamabad or Rawalpindi and pick the car up from the supplier’s city location, usually the next morning. The third option, which this guide argues for on most long-haul arrivals, is a pre-arranged transfer to your hotel or family home and a self-drive car delivered there the following day.
The short version: airport delivery makes sense for daytime arrivals on short-haul or Gulf flights, when you are rested and can inspect the car in good light. For an overnight arrival from London, Manchester, Toronto or New York, the risks stack up: a flight that lands late, a handover in a dim car park, a 25 km drive to the twin cities on unfamiliar roads, and a body clock that thinks it is 3am. Paying for one transfer and collecting the car later usually costs less than it saves you in risk.
Decision summary: delivery, branch or transfer-then-collect
Three variables decide this: your arrival time, how long you have been travelling, and whether you have driven in Pakistan before. The table sets the options against the factors that actually cause problems at handover.
| Factor | Airport delivery at ISB | Branch collection next day | Transfer to hotel, then car delivered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driving when you are most tired | Yes, immediately after landing | No, after a night’s sleep | No, after a night’s sleep |
| Inspection light | Car park lighting at night; daylight only on daytime arrivals | Daylight at the branch | Daylight at your address |
| Exposure to flight delays | High: the handover depends on your landing time | None | Low: the transfer absorbs the delay, the car does not |
| Extra charges to ask about | Delivery charge, waiting time, out-of-hours handover | Your own transport to the branch | Transfer fare plus a delivery charge to your address |
| First drive | Airport to the twin cities, possibly in the dark | City streets in daylight | City streets in daylight |
| Best suited to | Daytime arrivals, rested drivers, repeat visitors | Budget travellers staying near the branch | Overnight long-haul arrivals, families with luggage |
None of this makes airport delivery wrong. It makes it a choice that depends on the clock. If your flight lands at 2pm after a short hop from Dubai, the case for having the car waiting is strong. If it lands at 4am after an overnight sector with a connection, the case is weak.
How airport delivery works when you rent a car at Islamabad airport
Islamabad International Airport sits near Fateh Jang in Attock District, roughly 25 km southwest of central Islamabad and about the same distance from Rawalpindi’s Saddar, according to its published location and access details. It is reached from Islamabad by the Srinagar Highway, from Rawalpindi via GT Road (N-5), and the Srinagar Highway also connects to the M-1 motorway towards Peshawar. That geography matters: whatever you arrange, the car has to travel out to the airport, and so do you if you collect in town.
When a supplier advertises “rent a car Islamabad airport”, it usually means a delivery handover, which runs like this:
- The car is brought to the airport ahead of your scheduled landing and parked in the general car park. The airport’s parking page describes a general car park for 2,200 vehicles, charged by time. The published rate for cars effective 1 July 2026 is Rs 130 for the first three hours and Rs 80 for each additional hour, with a 24-hour day pass at Rs 980. Rates change, so treat those as the current published figures rather than a fixed cost.
- You clear the terminal. ISB’s arrival procedure runs from immigration (with lanes marked for overseas Pakistanis and foreigners) to the baggage belts, then the green or red customs channel, and out into the concourse hall, where the car park, taxis and rent-a-car options are signposted.
- You meet the handover agent at an agreed point, walk to the car together, inspect it, sign the handover sheet and drive off.
- Parking time is settled on exit. Ask in advance whether the supplier’s quote includes the parking charge for the time the car sat waiting, or whether you pay it at the barrier.
Two practical points are easy to miss. First, the airport’s entrance gate guidance says the Airport Security Force carries out body and under-vehicle searches at entry points, and that visitors need a CNIC, a valid ticket or a passport to enter. The handover agent goes through those checks too, which adds time. Second, the same page allows only one greeter per passenger at the pedestrian gate, so if family are also meeting you, agree a handover point in the car park rather than at the arrivals door.
What a delivery quote should state
Before you accept any airport delivery, get these points in writing:
- The delivery charge, shown separately from the daily hire rate.
- Who pays the car park charges while the car waits for you.
- Any surcharge for a late-night or pre-dawn handover.
- The agent’s mobile and WhatsApp number, plus a fallback contact.
On iDrive, a self-drive car rental enquiry is matched to a supplier who then confirms availability and terms. Nothing is fixed until that supplier accepts the request, so read the confirmed terms rather than relying on the first figure you saw.
Flight delays and waiting: the clause to read first
Most airport delivery disputes are not about the car. They are about time. A handover is scheduled against a landing time, and landing times move. The questions to settle before you fly are simple, and the answers vary from supplier to supplier:
- Is waiting measured from scheduled or actual arrival? The fair version tracks your flight and starts the clock when the aircraft lands. The less fair version starts it at the scheduled time, so a 90-minute delay eats your free waiting and then some.
- How long is the free window? After immigration, baggage and customs, a window that looks generous on paper can be tight in practice.
- What happens if the agent has to leave? Some suppliers will redeliver later for an extra charge. Some will ask you to collect from the branch. Some will treat it as a no-show. Find out which before you board.
- What if your flight is cancelled or diverted? Ask whether the delivery charge is refundable and how much notice you must give to move the handover.
Give the supplier your flight number, not just the time. Arrival boards are published on the airport’s own arrivals schedule and on airline apps, so a careful agent can track it. Message when you land and again when you clear customs. By contrast, a driver meeting you for an Islamabad airport transfer treats flight tracking and waiting as the core of the job, while a handover agent usually has the next delivery to get to.
Inspecting a hire car in the car park at night
A daytime handover lets you see every scuff. A 1am handover under car park lighting does not. Scratches, kerbed alloys and small dents are exactly the kind of damage that shows up in daylight three days later and becomes an argument at return. If you do accept a night-time airport delivery, treat the inspection as a procedure, not a glance.
A night inspection routine that holds up
- Use your phone torch, held low and at an angle. Raking light shows dents and scratches that overhead light hides.
- Record a slow video walking round the car, starting at the front number plate, with the time and date visible on your phone. Say out loud what you see. Then photograph each panel, each wheel and the windscreen separately.
- Check the tyres, including tread and sidewalls, and ask where the spare, jack and wheel brace are. Look at them.
- Start the car and check the dashboard for warning lights. Photograph the odometer and the fuel gauge.
- Test the lights: dipped, main beam, indicators, brake lights and reverse. The US State Department’s Pakistan country information warns that many vehicles do not have working headlights or dimmers, and that many roads are neither lit nor signed. Your own lights need to be right.
- Check the papers in the car: the registration documents and anything else the supplier says must be carried.
- Get every mark written on the handover sheet before you sign, and photograph the signed sheet.
If the lighting is too poor to inspect properly, say so and ask for the damage sheet to be marked as “inspected at night, subject to daylight check”, then send daylight photos to the supplier the next morning. A reasonable supplier will accept that. If they will not, that tells you something about how return disputes will go.
Branch collection the next morning
Branch collection is the least glamorous option and often the most sensible for budget-conscious travellers. You arrive, get to your accommodation by whatever means you have arranged, sleep, and collect the car from the supplier’s location in Islamabad or Rawalpindi in daylight.
The advantages are practical:
- No delivery charge and no airport parking charges.
- Inspection in daylight, often with the supplier’s staff and a second car to swap to if the first has a fault.
- No handover timing risk tied to your flight.
- Your first drive is in city traffic you can take at your own pace, rather than a night run from Fateh Jang.
The drawbacks are just as real. You still need a way to get from ISB to the city on the night you land, and then to the branch the next morning. Branch hours may not suit an early start, and if the branch is on the far side of the twin cities from where you are staying, the saving shrinks. Ask whether you get the quoted car or “a similar vehicle”, and inspect it with the same routine. Daylight makes it easier, not optional.
Transfer to the hotel, then self-drive: the option most people overlook
For long-haul arrivals, this is the option we would steer most careful travellers towards. You book a driver to meet you at ISB and take you, your family and your luggage to your hotel or family home. The self-drive car is then delivered to that address the next day, at a time you choose, in daylight.
What this buys you:
- No driving on the night you land. The drive from the airport is handled by someone who does it every day.
- Delay protection where it belongs. Transfers are built around flight tracking and waiting. A delayed flight changes a driver’s evening. It does not wreck a self-drive handover.
- A proper inspection. The car arrives at your door in daylight, and you can take your time with it.
- Luggage sorted. Overseas families often land with several large cases. A transfer vehicle can be sized for them; a self-drive car chosen for city driving may not take them all.
The cost is one transfer fare plus a delivery charge to your address, set against the airport delivery charge and parking you would otherwise pay. Depending on where you are staying, the difference can be modest. Ask for both options side by side when you enquire. For the airport leg, iDrive’s airport transfers across Pakistan cover ISB alongside Lahore, Karachi and the regional airports. If you prefer a warmer, family-focused planning guide for the ISB arrival itself, our sister service Pakistan Taxi (an iDrive brand) has an Islamabad airport journey guide that walks through meeting points and timings.
Car hire delivery to a hotel or family home works like airport delivery without the airport. Send a precise address with a map pin (Rawalpindi housing societies are harder to find than Islamabad sector addresses), tell hotel security or reception the agent’s name in advance, and check there is off-road parking if you are staying with family.
Airport car rental after a long flight: the fatigue question
This is the factor that most comparisons skip, and it is the one that should weigh most. Airport car rental after a long flight puts you behind the wheel at the moment you are least fit to drive: dehydrated, short of sleep, and on a body clock several hours out of step with local time. Coming from Europe or North America, an arrival that looks like early morning in Islamabad can feel like the middle of the night, and the effect is worst on the first day.
The UK Highway Code, which many overseas visitors learned to drive under, is blunt about this. Rule 91 says driving when tired greatly increases the risk of collision, says not to begin a journey if you are tired, and advises against long journeys between midnight and 6am, when natural alertness is at a minimum. Check your own landing time against that window; overnight sectors from Europe and connections through the Gulf can put you on the ground inside it.
Then add the road environment. The UK FCDO’s Pakistan safety and security advice describes local driving standards as erratic, especially at night. The US State Department notes that Pakistan drives on the left, that roads can be crowded and poorly maintained, and that animals, horse carts, cyclists and pedestrians can be roadside hazards. A fresh local driver copes with that. Someone awake for twenty hours, working out the Srinagar Highway junctions for the first time, is taking a real risk.
When self-drive car delivery at the airport does work
- You are arriving in daylight and have slept on the flight or flown a short sector from the Gulf.
- You have driven in Islamabad or Rawalpindi before and know the route to where you are staying.
- You are travelling light and alone or with one other adult, so the handover is quick.
- Your first destination is on a straightforward route, not a drive to Murree or beyond on the first night.
If most of those are true, self-drive car delivery at the airport is a sensible, time-saving choice. If most are false, it is a convenience that shifts risk onto you.
Lahore and Karachi: how the airport picture changes
The same three options exist at Lahore and Karachi, but the balance shifts with each airport’s distance from town and the roads you meet on the first drive.
Lahore (Allama Iqbal International, LHE)
Allama Iqbal International is about 15 km from Lahore’s city centre, according to its airport profile, against roughly 25 km for ISB from central Islamabad. For car rental airport pickup in Lahore, that shorter distance cuts both ways. The first drive after landing is shorter, which reduces the fatigue risk. It is also a drive straight into dense city traffic rather than along a highway. For an overnight Lahore arrival, the ISB logic still applies. Our Lahore airport transfer page covers the first leg.
Karachi (Jinnah International, KHI)
Jinnah International sits near Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Malir, and is reached via Shahrah-e-Faisal, as its airport profile sets out. Its car park holds more than 3,000 vehicles, so an airport handover is physically straightforward. The harder part is the first drive: Shahrah-e-Faisal is not where you want to learn local driving habits on no sleep. Daytime and rested, airport delivery is fine; overnight and jet-lagged, take a transfer and have the car brought to you.
Documents to carry in your hand luggage
Keep the handover papers in your cabin bag, not in a checked case that may arrive on a later flight: your passport (and CNIC or NICOP if you hold one), your full driving licence, the supplier’s accepted terms saved offline, and a payment card in the main driver’s name if a deposit is taken that way. UK licence holders also need the 1968 international driving permit: the FCDO says you must carry it with your UK licence, that it cannot be bought outside the UK, and that driving without the correct documents can lead to detention and a police report. Our guide to driving in Pakistan with a UK licence covers the detail. Save the Islamabad Traffic Police helpline, 1915, listed on the Islamabad Police website, before your first drive.
Making the request
When you send an enquiry, give the supplier enough to quote properly the first time: your flight number and scheduled landing time, the number of adults, children and large cases, where you are staying, how many days you want the car, and whether you want airport delivery, branch collection or a transfer followed by delivery to your address. Ask for the last two priced side by side if you are unsure. You can start that through the iDrive journey request page; a supplier then confirms what is available and on what terms, and you decide from there.
Questions people ask
Can I rent a car at Islamabad airport without booking in advance?
The airport’s arrival guidance lists rent-a-car options in the concourse hall, but availability on the spot is not something to rely on, especially late at night. Arranging it before you fly lets you check the car, the terms and the handover time in advance.
Is airport delivery more expensive than collecting from a branch?
Usually, yes. Delivery normally carries its own charge, and someone has to cover the car park time while the car waits. Ask for the delivery charge and parking to be shown separately so you can compare like with like.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
It depends on the supplier’s waiting terms. Ask whether waiting is measured from scheduled or actual landing, how long the free window is, and what happens if the agent has to leave. Get the answer in writing before you fly.
