Everything else on a VIP brochure, from lobby chandeliers to a “royal” package name, changes the price far more than it changes the pilgrimage.
So read any offer in that order. Ask how many metres the hotel is from the nearest mosque gate, which side of the mosque that gate is on, and whether the room category is written into the contract. Ask whether the transfers are private and in what class of vehicle. Ask which airline, which cabin and which aircraft. Then ask who, by name, meets you at Jeddah or Madinah. If a seller cannot answer those four questions in writing, the word “luxury” on the quote is decoration.

A star rating describes a building: its facilities, service levels and fittings. It says nothing about where that building sits relative to the mosque. Two hotels can carry identical ratings while one is steps from the courtyard and the other needs a shuttle bus. That is the single most common gap between what 5 star Umrah packages from Pakistan promise and what pilgrims find when they arrive.
Distance is measured to a gate, not to “the Haram”
Masjid al-Haram is enormous, and its expansion areas stretch a long way from the Kaaba. “Five minutes from the Haram” can mean five minutes to an outer gate followed by a long walk inside to reach the mataf. Ask for the distance to a specific, named gate and ask which part of the mosque that gate opens onto.
A useful reference point: the Abraj Al Bait complex, home of the clock tower, stands across the piazza to the south of the King Abdul-Aziz Gate, roughly 300 metres from the mosque, according to its Wikipedia entry and the sources it cites. The tallest tower houses a five-star hotel operated by Fairmont. When a quote says a hotel is “near” the Haram, ask how it compares with that 300-metre yardstick.
Room category, view and occupancy
Premium hotels in Makkah sell a wide spread of rooms under one roof: standard rooms facing the city, rooms with a partial view, rooms with a direct Kaaba view, and suites. The price gap between them is large, and the package quote often names only the hotel. If the contract says “5 star hotel, Makkah” with no room category, the operator is free to place you in the cheapest room the hotel sells.
Occupancy matters just as much. Many Pakistani package prices are quoted per person on a shared basis, with double, triple and quad rooms priced differently. A “per person” figure that assumes four adults in one room is not comparable with one that assumes two. Put the occupancy next to the price before you compare anything.
Madinah is half the trip
Many 5 star hotel Umrah packages from Pakistan concentrate their budget on Makkah and treat Madinah as an afterthought. Ask the same questions about the Madinah hotel: distance to the Prophet’s Mosque, which side, which room. If you plan to visit the Rawdah, entry needs its own permit, which the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah issues through the Nusuk platform. No hotel star rating includes one.
Private car or shared coach: the VIP transfer question
Transport is where standard and premium packages diverge most in daily experience. A standard package usually moves its group together on a coach. That means waiting at the airport until the whole group clears immigration and collects luggage, then waiting again at each hotel as bags are unloaded. For a grandmother who has just done an overnight flight, it can wreck the first day.
A genuine Umrah package from Pakistan VIP tier should name the vehicle type and state that the transfer is private to your party. Look for these details on the quote:
- Private or shared. “Luxury transport” sometimes means a newer coach. Private means only your party travels in the vehicle.
- Vehicle class. A sedan, a full-size SUV or a people carrier. Match it to the number of adults and suitcases, not just the number of seats. Zamzam cartons and shopping on the way home take more space than people expect.
- Which legs are covered. Airport to Makkah hotel, Makkah to Madinah, Madinah hotel to airport, and any ziyarat. Some quotes include only the airport runs.
- Waiting time. What happens if immigration takes two hours? Ask whether the driver waits and whether extra time is charged.

Flights: business class and premium cabins from Pakistan
Pakistan has a dense web of direct flights to Saudi Arabia, but the choice of premium cabins is narrower than the number of flights suggests. According to the airport’s Islamabad International Airport entry, Airblue, AirSial, Fly Jinnah, PIA and Saudia all fly from Islamabad to Jeddah, and PIA also flies to Madinah. At Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International, Jeddah is the second-busiest route by weekly flights in the airport’s route table, shared between Pakistani and Saudi carriers. From Karachi, Saudia and flyadeal serve Jeddah, while flynas and PIA both fly to Madinah as well as Jeddah. Schedules change by season, so confirm the route on the airline’s own site.
Not every carrier on these routes sells a premium cabin, and the same airline can fly different aircraft on the same route on different days. Saudia’s fleet listing is a good illustration: it runs Boeing 777-300ERs in more than one layout, some with a first-class cabin and some with business and economy only, and its A320s come in both two-cabin and single-cabin versions. Which aircraft operates your flight decides what the “business” seat actually is.
What to check before paying a business class supplement
- Aircraft type on your specific flight number. A lie-flat seat on a widebody and a wider recliner on a narrowbody are both sold as business.
- Baggage allowance. Premium cabins usually carry a higher allowance. Confirm the figure and whether a Zamzam carton counts towards it.
- Lounge access at your departure airport. Ask the airline, not the travel agent, which lounge you can use in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi.
- Arrival airport. Flying straight into Madinah and finishing in Makkah can remove one long road leg. Weigh the route before the cabin.

Airport assistance at both ends
“Airport fast-track” is one of the vaguest lines on a premium quote. It can mean a staff member holding a name board in the arrivals hall, a porter for your bags, help with a wheelchair, or a paid service that takes you through a separate lane. Some of these depend on the airport and airline, not the package operator.
Treat assistance as three separate questions:
- Departure in Pakistan. Is there help at check-in and security in Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi? Is a lounge included, and is it the airline’s or a paid lounge?
- Arrival in Saudi Arabia. Who meets you, where, and do they come airside or wait at the exit? What happens if your flight lands at a different terminal from the one on the itinerary?
- Special assistance. Wheelchair help is normally requested through the airline in advance. Book it when you book the ticket, and do not rely on the package operator to arrange it for you.
An honest operator will say plainly what it controls and what it does not. Be wary of anyone who promises a guaranteed skip-the-queue exit through immigration. Passport control belongs to the state, not the travel agent.
Makkah to Madinah: private car or the Haramain train
The Haramain high-speed railway runs 449 kilometres between Makkah and Madinah via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City, at operating speeds of up to 300 km/h. The Makkah to Madinah journey takes around two hours, and a branch serves King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, opened in December 2019, according to the Haramain railway entry and its cited sources.
That makes the train hard to beat on journey time, but the stations are not at the mosques. Makkah’s station is in the Rusaifah district near the Third Ring Road, so every rail journey begins and ends with a road transfer. Neither option is automatically the premium one. The real trade-off is between speed and door-to-door simplicity.

If your package includes the train, check whether station transfers at both ends are private or shared, and whether the ticket class is stated. If it includes a road transfer, check that it is private and that the vehicle suits your party and luggage. A package that says only “Makkah to Madinah transport” has told you nothing.
The Pakistan leg: getting to the departure airport
Premium packages usually begin at the check-in desk. For many families, the hardest part of the journey is before that: an early-morning drive from Jhelum or Gujar Khan to Islamabad, or from Gujranwala or Sheikhupura to Lahore, with parents, children, suitcases and sometimes an elderly relative who needs help at every step.
Islamabad International Airport sits in Fateh Jang, about 25 km south-west of Islamabad, and is linked by the Srinagar Highway and directly to the Lahore and Peshawar motorways. Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International is about 15 km from the city centre. Both distances look small until you add pre-dawn traffic, the airline’s check-in deadline and the time it takes to load a family’s luggage.

A safety note for travellers from the north-west. At the time of writing, the UK FCDO Pakistan travel advice advises against all travel to Peshawar, including the city, and to a long list of other Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts, and to the whole of Balochistan. It also advises against all but essential travel to parts of Sindh north of Nawabshah and to parts of Punjab around Dera Ghazi Khan. Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi are not on those lists. On the Saudi side, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah launched Nusuk in 2022 as the replacement for the Eatmarna app, and in 2025 expanded it with Nusuk Umrah, which lets pilgrims from abroad apply directly for an Umrah visa and book related services online. Accredited agents remain available through the same system, according to the Umrah entry and the reporting it cites. In practice, that means a premium package is a service choice, not the only route to a visa.
On the Pakistani side, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony is the federal body responsible for Pakistani pilgrims travelling for Umrah and Hajj, including their welfare. Ask the company selling your luxury package for its ministry registration details, check them against what the ministry publishes, and keep the operator’s name, address and registration on your paperwork. A glossy website and a famous hotel name are not a registration.
