Karachi airport to Islamabad airport: fly-and-drive timing done honestly

The KHI to ISB distance is about 1,107 km in a straight line. Here is how to plan the full fly-and-drive day as ranges: Karachi traffic, check-in cut-offs, the flight, the Islamabad kerb and what to do if the flight slips.

The Karachi airport to Islamabad airport distance is about 1,107 km in a straight line, runway to runway, which is roughly 598 nautical miles. That figure is ours, calculated from the published coordinates of Jinnah International Airport (KHI) and Islamabad International Airport (ISB), and it is the only fixed number in this whole journey. Everything else is a range. By road the trip is far longer: the N-5 National Highway alone runs some 1,540 km from Karachi to the Rawalpindi area, and the motorway route is also well over 1,100 km. So for almost everyone, the practical question is not how far it is but how long a door-to-door day takes when you add a car at each end of a domestic flight.

The honest answer: plan the day as four legs, give each a range rather than a time, and put the buffers where delays actually happen. The flight itself is the shortest and most predictable part. The legs that ruin itineraries are the drive to Jinnah International through Karachi traffic, the check-in cut-off, and the wait between landing at Islamabad and getting into a car. This guide sets out each leg, what the official sources say, where your slack belongs, and what to do when the domestic flight slips.

The decision summary

  • Fly, do not drive, unless you have a specific reason to see the country between the two cities. The road option is a multi-day undertaking; the flight is a morning or an afternoon.
  • Treat the flight as a window, not a slot. Take the scheduled times off your own ticket, then assume the arrival can move in either direction, sometimes by hours.
  • Put your biggest buffer before the check-in cut-off in Karachi, not after landing. Missing a counter closure costs you the flight; a late car at Islamabad costs you a wait at the kerb.
  • Book both ground legs together, with the flight number attached to the Islamabad pickup, so the arrival side follows the aircraft and not a clock time you guessed a week ago.
  • Never promise a meeting time at the far end that depends on the flight landing on schedule. Promise a window.

Karachi airport to Islamabad airport distance: air, road and what they mean for planning

Three distances get muddled in searches, and they answer different questions.

Straight-line (great-circle) distance

Using the coordinates listed for Jinnah International Airport (24.907°N, 67.161°E) and Islamabad International Airport (33.549°N, 72.826°E), the great-circle distance works out at about 1,107 km. Aircraft follow airways rather than a perfect line, so the distance flown is somewhat more, but for planning the difference is irrelevant.

Road distance

By road you are crossing most of the length of the country. The N-5 National Highway is listed at 1,819 km from Karachi to Torkham, with the Rawalpindi and Islamabad area at around the 1,540 km mark. The motorway alternative strings together the M-9 Karachi–Hyderabad (136 km), the Hyderabad–Sukkur link, the M-5 Sukkur–Multan (392 km), the M-4 Multan–Pindi Bhattian (309 km) and then the M-2 north to Islamabad. Add up the named southern segments and you are past 1,100 km before you even reach the M-2 interchange at Pindi Bhattian.

One caveat that matters for anyone tempted by the drive: the M-6 Hyderabad–Sukkur motorway, a planned 306 km six-lane link, had its foundation stone laid in December 2022 and has been described as the missing piece of north–south motorway connectivity. Check its current status before assuming a continuous motorway run; where it is not open, that stretch is national highway driving, which is slower and more variable.

What the numbers mean for you

For a meeting, a wedding function or an onward international departure, the road is not a competitor to the flight; it is a separate trip. It makes sense only for a large group with luggage, stops in Sukkur or Multan, or deliberate touring. If that is you, iDrive’s city-to-city car service is set up for long multi-stop journeys; plan it over at least two days, not one.

Karachi to Islamabad flight duration: use the ticket, then widen it

This is one of the country’s busiest domestic sectors. Wikipedia’s summary of Jinnah International lists Karachi–Islamabad as its busiest domestic route, with around 105 weekly flights, ahead of Karachi–Lahore. On the day we looked at the Islamabad International arrivals board, Karachi services were scheduled in from PIA, Fly Jinnah, AirSial and airblue, spread from breakfast time to late evening. If one flight goes wrong, another is rarely far behind, though a seat on it is never guaranteed.

We are deliberately not giving you a single flight-time figure. Scheduled times vary by carrier, aircraft and time of day, and airlines publish them with each booking. As a rough sense-check only, and labelled as such: at an illustrative cruise speed of 800 km/h, 1,107 km is well under an hour and a half in the air. The scheduled block time on your ticket is longer, because it includes pushback, taxiing, climb, approach and taxi-in. That scheduled figure is the one to work from.

Two practical rules follow:

  1. Plan on the printed arrival time, and assume it can drift either way. The Islamabad board uses statuses including “On Time”, “Delayed”, “Advanced” and “Expected”. “Advanced” is real: a flight can land early, which is exactly when a driver who was told a fixed clock time is not yet at the kerb.
  2. Re-check on the morning of travel. On 25 September 2026 the Islamabad departures board showed a Fly Jinnah Karachi service scheduled for 21:20 with an estimated departure of 07:00 the next morning. That is an extreme case, but it is the case your plan has to survive.

Karachi airport domestic departures: check-in, security and the cut-off that matters

Jinnah International Airport sits off Shahrah-e-Faisal, near Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Malir. The main Jinnah Terminal handles both domestic and international flights through two concourses, with the West Satellite Concourse used for domestic flights and the East Satellite Concourse for international. Your driver needs to know that you are on a domestic departure; it affects where you are dropped and how long the walk is.

The airline counter times are the hard deadline

Counter closing times are set by airlines, not airports, and they differ. Fly Jinnah’s check-in page, for example, says domestic counters open two hours before departure and close 45 minutes prior, and that online check-in opens 48 hours before departure. Other carriers set their own rules, so read the page for your airline and your ticket conditions. The number you build your Karachi schedule around is the counter-closure time, not the departure time.

How early to arrive

Islamabad International’s own departure procedures advise arriving 1.5 to 2 hours before a domestic flight, and describe baggage screening at an ASF (Airport Security Force) desk before you proceed. We apply the same logic at Karachi: aim to be walking into the terminal at least 1.5 hours before departure, which leaves time for an entry check, the queue, a slow bag drop and a walk to the domestic gate area.

The Karachi road leg is the least predictable part of the day

Karachi’s traffic is the variable nobody can quote for you. Distance tells you little; time of day, Shahrah-e-Faisal’s flow and any closures or VIP movements matter more. A standard journey time would be false precision. Instead:

  • Ask your driver or dispatcher for a pickup time based on the day and hour, not a map estimate taken the night before.
  • Add a margin on top of that for things that happen at the kerb: loading bags, a family member who is not ready, a stop for fuel or cash.

Our Karachi airport transfer page explains how an iDrive airport drop is requested, and the Karachi taxi and car hire service covers the city-side pickup if you are coming from a hotel, office or home in DHA, Clifton, Saddar or further out.

Domestic arrival to kerb time at Islamabad

Domestic arrivals at Islamabad are simpler than international ones: no immigration, no customs hall. The airport’s arrivals procedure sends domestic passengers to the arrival lounge to collect their luggage, then through the concourse hall to the car park, taxis and rent-a-car counters. Check your flight number on the screens above the belts, and report missing bags to your airline before you leave; the airport notes that damage claims must be made within seven days.

If you only have hand luggage, landing to kerb can be quick. If you checked bags, the belt is the wait you cannot control. Either way, three things at Islamabad affect the pickup:

  • Entry checks for the car. The airport’s entrance gate guidance says ASF staff carry out body and under-vehicle searches at every entry point, and directs taxis and private cars to Gate I. A driver arriving to collect you goes through this, so a driver who sets off late cannot make it up at the gate.
  • One greeter per passenger. The same page says only one greeter is allowed per passenger because of space constraints, and that visitors must show a CNIC, airline ticket or valid passport. If a relative plans to come in with the driver, tell them this in advance.
  • Where the airport is. ISB is at Fateh Jang in Attock District, about 25 km south-west of Islamabad, and linked by the Srinagar Highway, GT Road and the M-1 and M-2. The onward leg into Blue Area, F-sectors, Bahria Town or Rawalpindi is a proper drive, not a short hop.

For a family arriving to be met, our guide to meeting family at Islamabad or Sialkot airport walks through the arrivals pickup in more detail, and the Islamabad airport transfer service is where an iDrive pickup is requested.

A leg-by-leg planning table

The table below shows how to think about each leg. The “planning allowance” column is our suggested approach to buffers, not a measured average and not a promise; your own figures should come from your ticket, your airline’s rules and your driver’s advice on the day.

Leg What fixes the time What moves it Planning allowance (our approach)
1. Pickup to Jinnah International Nothing; this is the most variable leg Karachi traffic, time of day, route closures, kerb delays Driver’s estimate for that hour, plus a generous margin
2. Terminal entry to airside Airline counter-closure time Queues, bag drop, security screening Arrive at least 1.5 hours before departure; never cut into the counter deadline
3. The flight Scheduled block time on your ticket Late inbound aircraft, ATC, weather, operational delay Plan on the printed arrival; treat the next few hours as “possible”
4. Landing to Islamabad kerb Nothing; belt speed rules Checked bags, gate position, walk, driver’s gate entry Short if hand luggage only; longer with checked bags or a group
5. ISB to final address Distance, since ISB is outside the city Time of day, destination sector, Rawalpindi traffic Do not schedule anything firm on arrival day without a cushion

Only two numbers in the day are genuinely fixed: the Karachi counter closure and the scheduled departure. Everything downstream inherits the flight’s uncertainty, so the buffer goes upstream.

Buffer time after a domestic flight: ranges beat fixed times

Itineraries written as clock times fail badly. An example: “Land 10:55, car 11:10, meeting 12:15” collapses the first time the belt is slow. A range-based itinerary says the same thing honestly: “Flight scheduled to land late morning; car waiting from landing, tracking the flight; first commitment no earlier than early afternoon.”

A window lets the person meeting you plan their own day, and lets the driver time the Gate I entry against live arrival status rather than a stale estimate.

How much buffer after landing?

There is no universal figure. As a way of thinking rather than a rule:

  1. Start from the scheduled arrival on your ticket.
  2. Add time for bags if you checked any, and more for a family or group with several cases.
  3. Add the ISB-to-destination drive for that time of day, remembering the airport is around 25 km outside Islamabad.
  4. Then decide how much of a delay you can absorb. For a relaxed family visit, not much buffer is needed. For a court hearing, embassy appointment, nikah or a same-day onward international flight, build in enough that a delayed departure from Karachi does not wreck the commitment; for the most important events, travel the day before.

Same-day connections to an international flight

Islamabad’s departure guidance asks passengers to arrive four hours before an international flight. A separately booked domestic sector feeding that window leaves little room for a slip; consider the previous evening’s flight instead.

Domestic flight plus car transfer: booking both ground legs together

The most common mistake with a domestic flight plus car transfer is booking the two ends as unrelated jobs. The Karachi drop is arranged by the hotel, the Islamabad pickup by a relative, and nobody holds the whole picture. When the flight moves, the Islamabad side hears about it last.

Requesting both legs through one iDrive booking fixes the information problem, not the physics. One record carries the flight number and passenger details for both drivers, and a change to one leg is visible on the other.

What it does not mean: a guaranteed vehicle at either end, a fixed fare before a quote is confirmed, or a driver held indefinitely at no cost. Requests are matched to available vehicles, quotes are confirmed before the trip, and waiting-time terms are set out when the booking is confirmed. Read them, especially if your flight is prone to evening delays.

When you request the legs, include a landmark for the Karachi pickup, the flight number, bag count and a phone that will be on when you land. Booking from the UK or the Gulf for family? Say whose phone the drivers should call; usually the traveller, not the payer.

What happens if the domestic flight slips

Delays on this sector are not rare, and they come in three shapes. Each needs a different response.

A short delay, announced before you leave for Karachi airport

Do not simply shift your Karachi pickup by the same amount. Counters may still close on the original schedule, and the airline may recover time. Ask when counters will close and plan the drop against that; keep the Islamabad pickup tied to the flight number.

A delay that develops after you are airside

Your Karachi leg is done, so only Islamabad needs managing. Message the booking with the new estimate, and tell any relative meeting you to wait at home until the flight shows as departed.

A long delay, overnight slip or cancellation

Rebooking or refunds sit with the airline under your ticket’s conditions. On the ground side:

  1. Cancel or move the Islamabad pickup as early as you can; check the cancellation terms shown on the booking.
  2. If you are staying in Karachi overnight, arrange the return from Jinnah International to a hotel or home.
  3. Re-request the Islamabad pickup for the new flight number once you have it.
  4. If the trip was for a fixed event, decide early whether a road transfer is realistic. For most people it will not be: at over 1,100 km of motorway and highway, the drive is not a same-day rescue for a morning appointment.

For the critical trips, the flight before the one you need is the only buffer that truly works. Everything else just manages the disappointment.

Constraints and checks before you commit

  • Identity documents. Islamabad airport’s passenger guidance tells travellers to always carry their CNIC. Foreign nationals should carry a passport; carry the same document you used for the ticket.
  • Airline-specific counter rules. Do not assume one airline’s closing time applies to another. Check your own carrier.
  • Metro bus at Islamabad. A metrobus has linked the airport with Islamabad and Rawalpindi since April 2022; fine for a solo traveller with light bags, less so for a family with cases.

If your arrival in Karachi is the first stage of a longer visit, our sister service Pakistan Taxi’s Karachi airport journey guide covers the arrival side of Jinnah International in a more family-focused, step-by-step way.

Your next step

When you have your flight number, request both ground legs in one go through the iDrive booking page: Karachi pickup to Jinnah International, and Islamabad International to your final address. Give the flight number, bag count and phone numbers, and let the pickup follow the aircraft. You will get a confirmed quote before the trip; the vehicle is matched to your request rather than guaranteed in advance, so the earlier you ask, the better your options.

Questions people ask

What is the Karachi airport to Islamabad airport distance?

About 1,107 km in a straight line between the two runways, based on the airports’ published coordinates. By road it is much longer; the N-5 runs roughly 1,540 km from Karachi to the Rawalpindi area.

How long is the Karachi to Islamabad flight?

Scheduled times vary by airline and time of day, so use the times on your ticket. Allow for the arrival moving either earlier or later, and check live status before you set off.

How early should I get to Karachi airport for a domestic flight?

Work back from your airline’s counter-closure time. Fly Jinnah, for example, closes domestic counters 45 minutes before departure; Islamabad airport advises 1.5 to 2 hours for domestic flights. Aim for at least 1.5 hours.
