Sialkot flights shifted to Lahore: re-routing your airport pickup

If your Sialkot flights shifted to Lahore airport, your pickup has to move with them: the driver waits at Allama Iqbal International in Lahore instead of Sialkot, the journey home becomes a motorway transfer rather than a short airport run, and the original booking needs to be amended or closed in writing. The quickest safe sequence is this. Confirm the change on the airline’s own channel, send the operator your new arrival airport, flight number and time in one message, ask for a revised quote for the longer drive, and keep a short change record that ties the old booking to the new one. That record is what settles any refund, credit or expense claim later.

This is not a hypothetical problem. In late August 2025 PIA moved its Sialkot operation to Lahore while floodwater threatened the airport, and Sialkot has closed for runway repairs more than once. Decision summary: what to do in the first hour

• Verify before you rebook anything. A WhatsApp forward saying “Sialkot is closed” is not a notice. Check the airline’s booking record, SMS or email, and the call centre.
• Change the existing booking rather than creating a second one. Two open bookings for the same passenger is how people end up paying a no-show fee in Sialkot while riding out of Lahore.
• Send one complete amendment message. New airport, new flight number, new scheduled arrival time, passenger count, bags, and the final drop-off address.
• Expect a different price. Lahore airport to Sialkot is a longer job than a pickup at Sialkot airport. Ask for a revised quote and do not assume the old figure carries over.
• Write the change down. Old reference, new reference or amended reference, reason for the change, the airline notice, and who confirmed it.

Why Sialkot flights shifted to Lahore airport in the past

For many families in Sialkot, Gujranwala, Gujrat and Mirpur, Sialkot is the convenient international airport, so when it shuts, their flights are pushed onto a larger airport further away. Three causes come up repeatedly.

Flooding

On 28 August 2025, Business Recorder reported that PIA had shifted all flights scheduled from Sialkot to Lahore because of the closure, naming PK 746 (Jeddah to Sialkot), PK 745 (Sialkot to Jeddah), PK 239 (Sialkot to Kuwait) and PK 244 (Dammam to Sialkot). Floodwater was moving towards the airport from the south and drainage work was under way. Two days later, Profit reported the suspension at Sialkot running until 10pm on 31 August, with PIA services operating from Allama Iqbal International instead. Operations restarted on 2 September; The Nation reported that airport authorities said the runway, apron, terminal and essential equipment were undamaged.

The useful lesson is the timeline. The shift was announced, extended and reversed within about five days. A pickup booked for day four of a closure could easily land on a reopened airport, so check again the night before and once more before the driver sets off.

Runway works

Planned runway work is the more predictable cause. Daily Pakistan reported a closure from 5 to 20 December 2022, with national and international flights diverted to Lahore and Islamabad. In 2024, 24 News reported a 13-day closure from 6 to 18 May for runway repair, notified to airlines by Notice to Airmen, with flights diverted to other cities and passengers told to contact their airlines.

Note the Islamabad possibility. A Sialkot closure does not automatically mean Lahore; it depends on the airline and the individual flight. Do not tell your operator “Lahore” until your own booking says Lahore.

Fog and weather

Winter fog is the third cause and the least tidy, because it can produce a same-day diversion rather than a scheduled shift. Dawn reported on 16 December 2025 that PIA’s schedule was affected at Lahore, Multan, Sialkot and Faisalabad because of dense fog, with passengers urged to check flight status before leaving for the airport. Fog also affects the road you will use afterwards, which matters for the pickup plan further down.

Checking the airline notice properly

Everything downstream depends on one fact: which airport your aircraft will actually use, and when. Get that from the source that controls your ticket.

1. Open the booking on the airline’s own site or app. A schedule change normally shows against the booking itself. On PIA’s site, Manage Booking is where changes appear; PIA notes that its automated exchange and refund feature applies only to tickets bought on its website, so travel-agent tickets may need the agent.
2. Call the airline if the record has not updated. During the August 2025 shift, PIA told passengers to stay in contact with its call centre on 111-786-786 for updates. Numbers and channels change; use the one printed on your ticket.
3. Screenshot the change. The screen showing the new departure or arrival airport, with the date visible, is the single most useful document in your change record.
4. Check the direction of travel. An inbound diversion (you land in Lahore instead of Sialkot) and an outbound one (you must reach Lahore for a flight that was due to leave Sialkot) are two different transport jobs. The outbound one is less forgiving because the airline’s check-in deadline does not move for traffic.

If you booked through a travel agent, the agent may hold the airline’s notification and forget to pass it on. Ask them directly, and ask for the revised itinerary in writing.

Arrival airport changed: updating the booking

An arrival airport changed booking is an amendment, not a cancellation followed by a fresh order, and treating it that way keeps one audit trail. The operator needs enough in one message to re-plan the job without a round of follow-up questions. A workable amendment reads like this (example only; replace every detail with your own):

Booking ref [your reference]. Original pickup: Sialkot International, PK 746, [date]. Airline has moved this flight to Lahore, Allama Iqbal International. New scheduled arrival [time], same flight number. 4 passengers, 6 checked bags, 1 child seat. Final drop-off unchanged: [address], Sialkot. Screenshot of airline notice attached. Please confirm the revised pickup point, vehicle and price before I travel.

Four details decide whether the new pickup works:

• The new arrival time. Diverted or re-planned flights are often retimed, not just re-routed. The driver’s start time from wherever they are based depends on it.

• Vehicle size for the longer run. A car that was fine for a short hop from Sialkot airport with six bags squeezed in is less comfortable for a motorway run with elderly relatives. This is the moment to ask whether a larger vehicle makes sense.
• The final address. Families sometimes change the drop-off when the airport moves, for example staying overnight with relatives in Lahore. Say so now, not at the kerb.

If your original booking was a Sialkot airport pickup, the change is not only a new address. The job moves from one city to another, may go to a different driver or partner, and will almost certainly be priced differently. Do not treat the amendment as done until you have a written confirmation of the new details.

Diverted flight airport pickup: the road leg from Lahore

The drive is where most of the cost and time difference sits. A diverted flight airport pickup starting in Lahore is a proper intercity transfer, and it should be planned like one.

Lahore to Sialkot

The main route is the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway, M-11. When its first section opened, The Express Tribune reported the full project as a 91.2 km, four-lane motorway with seven interchanges, including connections for Gujranwala, Daska and Sambrial, and quoted officials saying it would cut Sialkot–Lahore travel to 50 minutes. Treat that as a city-to-city motorway figure from the launch, not a door-to-door promise. The Sialkot to Lahore airport distance by road is longer, because you still have to get from the airport to the motorway’s Lahore end and from the Sambrial side to your address. Ask your operator for the full door-to-door estimate rather than applying the 50 minutes to the whole trip.

Lahore to Kharian

Kharian sits north of Gujrat on the Grand Trunk Road. Families heading there from Lahore airport have a longer run than to Sialkot, and the best routing depends on the time of day and current road conditions. Let the operator plan it; your job is to give them the exact final address so the quote reflects the real distance.

Lahore to Mirpur

Mirpur is the long one. Many families from the Mirpur area use Sialkot precisely because it is closer than Lahore, so a shift to Lahore can turn a moderate transfer into a much longer day. If your plan was a Sialkot airport to Mirpur transfer, expect the re-quote to change substantially and think about rest stops, especially after an overnight flight from the UK or the Gulf.

Fog, floods and motorway closures

The same weather that moves the aircraft can close the road. On 11 January 2026, The Nation reported dense fog closing several motorway sections in Punjab, including M-11 from Lahore to Sambrial, with commuters advised to avoid unnecessary travel and plan journeys for daylight hours. During a flood-driven diversion, some local roads near your destination may also be affected. Build this into the decision: for a night arrival in fog season, an overnight in Lahore and a morning drive can be the safer and calmer plan.

Which situation are you in?

Not every change is the same job. Use this table to decide what to send and what to expect back.

The last row matters for money. A change forced by the airline and a change you chose may be handled differently under the booking terms, so be accurate about which it is.

Why the price changes

A pickup at Sialkot airport and a pickup at Lahore airport for the same final address are different journeys: more distance, more driver time, motorway tolls, and sometimes a different vehicle or partner. The fair outcome is a new quote for the new job, not the old price with a surcharge guessed at the kerb. 3. Your amendment message, as sent.

The original Sialkot booking has to end one of three ways, and you should know which before you travel.

• Amended into the new journey. The cleanest outcome. One reference, one updated price, with any difference paid or refunded.
• Cancelled and refunded. Sometimes simpler if the new job goes to a different partner. Check how long the refund takes to reach your card or account, especially for a UK or Gulf card.
• Held as credit. Useful if you will need a Sialkot pickup later on the same trip, for example the return flight once the airport reopens. Ask for the credit in writing, with any expiry.

The Sialkot catchment is heavily tied to Gulf and Saudi travel; all four PIA flights named in the August 2025 shift were Gulf routes, and three of them ran to or from Saudi Arabia (Jeddah and Dammam). That creates two knock-on effects.

First, the welcoming party. Relatives who planned to drive to Sialkot airport to meet an Umrah returnee now face a much longer drive to Lahore, often at night. What an operator should do for you

You are entitled to expect some basic competence when the airport moves. A careful operator should:

• acknowledge the amendment in writing and restate the new airport, time and address back to you;
• tell you plainly if the original vehicle or driver cannot do the new job, rather than going quiet;
• quote the new journey before you travel, not after;
• say what happens to the original booking and any money already paid;
• track the retimed flight, or at least tell you what to do if it lands late.
