Sialkot International is the natural airport for it. A routing site puts the drive at about 67 km and roughly one hour six minutes; that is a third-party estimate rather than an authority figure, and no authority publishes a road distance for this pair. Kharian itself sits on the N-5 Grand Trunk Road.
The motorway that is coming, and is not here
There is a direct motorway being built between this airport and Kharian, and it is worth knowing about precisely because it is not open yet. The M-12 runs 69 km from Sambrial, where the M-11 terminates by the airport, to Kharian: six lanes, a 120 km/h design speed, five interchanges and a one-kilometre bridge over the Chenab. It has been under construction since July 2022, was still unfinished as of April 2026, and has been revived as a priority project.
Until it opens the journey is a Grand Trunk Road journey, and we quote it as one. When it opens, the airport and Kharian will be a single motorway run and this page will change.
What a Kharian arrival actually looks like
Late, and heavy. Sialkot takes Gulf wide-bodies from Dubai, Jeddah, Doha, Sharjah, Muscat, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Kuwait City, and the traffic is overwhelmingly returning families rather than business travellers. The practical consequence is baggage: a family of five or six with the full checked allowance does not fit a seven-seat SUV, because the third row occupies the boot. Count the cases and we will size the vehicle to them.
The other consequence is timing. Nobody arriving at two in the morning wants to negotiate with a driver in a car park, and app coverage in the surrounding districts thins out badly at that hour. A driver waiting inside arrivals with your name, whose photograph and vehicle registration you already have, is the whole product on this route.
The wider corridor
Kharian is one stop on a corridor rather than an isolated town. Gujrat, Dina, Jhelum, Sarai Alamgir and the villages between them all sit along the same GT Road stretch, and a great many families have relatives in more than one of them. Multiple drops are normal on this route and they are much cheaper planned than improvised, so tell us all the addresses at the quote stage.
The M-13 Kharian to Rawalpindi motorway, 117 km with eight interchanges, a Jhelum river bridge and twin-tube tunnels through the Salt Range between Dina and Sohawa, has been under construction since September 2022. Together with the M-12 it would eventually put Kharian on a continuous motorway between Sialkot airport and Rawalpindi. Neither road is open.
Kharian is in Punjab, with no travel advisory
Kharian, Gujrat, Jhelum and Dina are all in Punjab and carry no UK travel restriction. If your journey continues across the river into Azad Kashmir — Mirpur, Dadyal, Chakswari — that leg carries advice against all but essential travel, checked 1 September 2026, and we will say so before you book rather than after.
