Mirpur has no airport. It is the single most important fact about getting there, and it is why this journey exists at all. The nearest options are Islamabad International, which Wikipedia records as 130 km away, and Sialkot International at 110 km. Everyone arriving to see family in Mirpur lands at one of the two and drives the rest.
Islamabad is the one most UK flights use, and it is also the more awkward of the two, because the airport is 25 km southwest of Islamabad, on the far side of the city from Kashmir. The drive starts by crossing the whole capital region before it even reaches the Grand Trunk Road.
The travel advice for Azad Kashmir, before anything else
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and against all travel to within ten miles of the Line of Control. Checked against gov.uk on 1 September 2026.
We put that first because most of the people making this journey are British passport holders visiting family, and almost none of them know it. Two things follow. Most UK travel insurance is void for travel against FCDO advice, so a policy bought for a trip to Pakistan may not cover the part of the trip that is actually in Kashmir. And consular assistance is limited. Visiting family may well be essential travel in your own judgement; that judgement is yours to make, and it is easier to make before you have paid for anything.
None of this applies to Pakistani nationals or to AJK residents, and none of it is a legal bar on anyone. Read the advice yourself, ring your insurer, and then plan the journey.
The road, and the town that decides it
There is no motorway to Mirpur and no national highway designated to it. Mirpur is linked to the Peshawar–Lahore Grand Trunk Road at Dina, in Jhelum District, and that junction is the whole route in one word. From the airport the drive runs on the Srinagar Highway to Zero Point, down the Islamabad Expressway, which covers 28 km to Rawat where it meets the N-5, and then southeast along the GT Road to Dina. At Dina you turn for Mangla and Mirpur.
Dina is also the answer to a question people ask constantly: there is no railway station in Mirpur, and the closest one is at Dina. If someone has told you to take the train to Mirpur, they mean the train to Dina and a car from there.
We do not publish a driving time for this route as a fact, because no authority publishes one. A routing site puts it at about one hour forty minutes; that is a third-party estimate for a car in clear conditions and it is not what a family with four suitcases experiences after a long-haul flight. Two to two and a half hours door to door is the honest planning assumption, and your driver will tell you on the day.
Why there are so many of you
This is not a coincidence of migration. When Mangla Dam was built in the 1960s it submerged over 280 villages and the towns of Mirpur and Dadyal, and displaced more than 110,000 people. Some of those displaced received work permits for Britain, and the community that grew from them is now around 747,000 people, roughly seventy per cent of the entire British Pakistani population, concentrated in Bradford, Birmingham and the northern cities. Mirpur is nicknamed Little England for a reason, and many shops in the city will take pounds sterling.
The dam was raised again between 2004 and 2009, affecting more than 40,000 further people at a resettlement cost of around Rs 70 billion. That programme built New Mirpur City and four satellite towns: Islamgarh, Chakswari, Dadyal and Siakh, plus the Mirpur Bypass and two bridges. If your family address is in one of those, it exists because of the water.
What is changing on this route
Two pieces of construction will alter this journey, and neither is finished, so we describe them as what they are rather than as improvements you can rely on.
The Rathoa Haryam bridge across the Mangla reservoir, linking Mirpur with Islamgarh, is 7,181 metres long and is described in reporting as the longest bridge over any reservoir in South Asia. Its foundation stone was laid on 22 October 2024, it is being built by the Frontier Works Organisation, and the last stretch was reported as due for completion around the middle of 2026. When it opens it shortens the runs from Mirpur to Islamgarh, Chakswari and Kotli considerably.
The M-13 Kharian to Rawalpindi motorway, 117 km with eight interchanges, has been under construction since September 2022 and includes a bridge over the Jhelum and twin-tube tunnels through the Salt Range between Dina and Sohawa. When that opens, the Islamabad to Dina leg stops being a GT Road journey. It is not open, so today it changes nothing.

We have not been able to verify a current published toll for the Grand Trunk Road section or for the Kashmir roads, so we do not print a figure. Tolls appear on your quote as a line item at the rate actually paid. For context, the National Highway Authority raised the general national-highway car rate to Rs 100 with effect from 10 July 2026.
Can you meet a night flight?
Yes, and most flights from the UK arrive at unsociable hours. Send the flight number and the scheduled arrival time and the driver will be inside arrivals with your name.
How much luggage can you take?
