If you are asking what do I need to travel to Pakistan from UK airports, the short answer fits on one line: a passport valid for at least six months from your visa application date, plus either a Pakistani visa issued online through NADRA before you fly or, if you are of Pakistani origin, a NICOP or POC card that lets you enter without one. Everything else (FCDO advice for where you are going, money, a working phone, and a car at the arrivals door) is preparation rather than paperwork. It still decides whether the first two hours on the ground go smoothly.
What most checklists skip is ownership. A family trip from Manchester or Heathrow usually has three or four adults involved: the traveller, the person paying, the relative waiting in Lahore, and whoever is “sorting the car”. When a document is missing or a driver is at the wrong gate, nobody is quite sure whose job it was. This guide gives every item a named owner, so you know who holds what before anyone leaves for the airport.
The decision summary: which entry route applies to you
The core requirements for travelling to Pakistan come down to two routes for most UK residents, and which one you take depends on your status, not your preference.
| Your situation | Document that gets you in | Where it comes from | Lead time to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| British citizen with no Pakistani origin | Pakistani visa, applied for in advance | Pakistan Online Visa System (visa.nadra.gov.pk) | Apply well before booking non-refundable travel; the portal tells applicants to plan travel only once the visa is issued |
| British-Pakistani dual national, or Pakistani citizen living in the UK | Valid NICOP (plus your British passport for the UK leg) | NADRA, online or by appointment at a Pakistan High Commission office in the UK | Weeks, not days: the London High Commission lists normal processing of 6-8 weeks, executive around 2 weeks |
| Foreign national with annulled Pakistani nationality, or born to parents who held it | Pakistan Origin Card (POC) | NADRA online only; the High Commission has stopped manual POC bookings | Treat as several weeks |
| Child travelling with one parent or relatives | Their own visa or NICOP, plus evidence of parental responsibility if asked | As above, plus the family’s own paperwork | Gather before departure; it cannot be fixed at the desk |
If a NICOP has expired, you are back to the visa route or a renewal. There is no grace period to rely on at the immigration counter.
Documents needed to travel to Pakistan, one by one
Passport
The FCDO entry requirements page for Pakistan says your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the date of your visa application. That is measured from the application, not from the flight, which catches people who apply early and travel late. Check the date before you pay any visa fee.
Visa for British passport holders
British citizens need a visa to visit Pakistan and must apply in advance. Applications go through the Pakistan Online Visa System run by NADRA. The portal offers visit, business, student, work and official categories. Two practical points from the portal itself: issuing a visa is the prerogative of the Government of Pakistan, and applicants should plan travel only after they receive a valid visa. In plain terms, do not buy a non-refundable ticket on the assumption that approval is a formality.
The FCDO adds a rule people forget on the way home: you must hold an unexpired visa, a Pakistani national identity card or a Pakistani passport to leave Pakistan. A long family stay that runs past the visa end date becomes an exit problem, so size the visa to the real trip, and sort any extension with the Pakistani authorities well before the end date rather than at the airport.
NICOP and POC for British-Pakistanis
According to the FCDO, NICOP and SNICOP holders can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay for an unlimited period. The Pakistan High Commission London NADRA page describes NICOP as the card for Pakistani citizens abroad and dual nationality holders, and their children. The POC is for foreigners whose Pakistani nationality was annulled or whose parents held it, and the High Commission says POC applications are now online only.
A detail that holds up many applications: the High Commission notes that parents’ and spouse’s NADRA cards must be valid before your own card can be processed. If your father’s NICOP expired years ago, renew his first. Appointments are required at the London, Manchester, Birmingham and Bradford offices; walk-ins are not served.
Two further points for dual nationals. First, you still need your British passport to come back into the UK; the FCDO says British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement. Second, entering on a NICOP means Pakistan treats you as its citizen, and the US State Department warns its own dual nationals that this can limit the consular help available to them. It is sensible to assume the same logic may apply to British consular support.
Children
The FCDO says you may need documentary evidence of parental responsibility before a child leaves Pakistan, particularly if the child is of Pakistani origin. The check comes on the way home, when the paperwork is back in a drawer in Bradford. If a child is travelling with one parent, grandparents or an uncle, carry a signed consent letter and a copy of the birth certificate.
Health paperwork
The FCDO lists a polio vaccine “in some circumstances” among its entry health requirements. The US State Department’s Pakistan page says proof of polio vaccination within one year may be required to leave Pakistan. Long-stay visitors should check this before the return flight, not at the check-in desk.
Customs: what not to pack
The FCDO is blunt: importing alcohol or pork products is illegal, and you could be detained for trying. That includes the duty-free bottle bought at Heathrow and the sausage rolls packed for the journey. Leave both behind.
Can you travel to Pakistan from UK right now? Read the FCDO map first
Yes. The FCDO does not advise against travel to the whole country. It does, however, advise against all travel or all but essential travel to large named areas, and this is the part of the preparation that should decide your itinerary before anything else. The current list lives on the FCDO Pakistan travel advice page; at the time of writing it includes:
- Against all travel: the whole of Balochistan; within 10 miles of the Afghanistan border; many Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts, including Peshawar, Swat, Charsadda, Kohat, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and the Waziristan districts; the Mansehra to Chilas section of the Karakoram Highway; the N45 from north of the Mardan ring road to the edge of Chitral city, including the Kalash valleys; and within 10 miles of the Line of Control.
- Against all but essential travel: within 5 miles of the India border (except the Grand Trunk road via Wagah and the Kartarpur Corridor); Malakand, Mardan, Nowshera, Shangla and Swabi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa; Azad Jammu and Kashmir; Sindh north of and including Nawabshah; and Dera Ghazi Khan district in Punjab.
This matters for UK families more than for most visitors. Mirpur and much of the Kashmiri diaspora’s home ground sits in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, which falls in the all-but-essential category, and Peshawar, a common family destination, sits in the all-travel category. Going against FCDO advice can also affect travel insurance, so read your policy wording against the map. If your trip is essential family business in one of these areas, that is your decision to make with full information; it is not a leisure trip, and no guide should pretend otherwise.
Across the whole country the FCDO describes a high threat of terrorism and sectarian violence, and notes that British nationals of Pakistani origin have been targeted by criminals, including kidnappers, because they are often perceived as wealthier than locals. Keep travel plans within a small circle and avoid posting live location updates.
Flights and arrival airports: what to expect on landing
Direct service between the UK and Pakistan has changed a lot in a short time. The UK Civil Aviation Authority lifted its ban on PIA on 16 July 2025, PIA restarted UK flying with Islamabad to Manchester in October 2025, and London to Lahore returned in March 2026. Frequencies and routes still move around, so treat any schedule you read online as a snapshot and check the airline’s own site. Many UK travellers also connect through Gulf hubs such as Dubai and Doha, which open up airports without a UK service.
| Airport | Code | Useful for | Arrival point to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Islamabad International | ISB | Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Chakwal, onward to AJK and the north | About 25 km south-west of Islamabad near Fateh Jang, so the drive into the city is a real journey, not a hop |
| Allama Iqbal International, Lahore | LHE | Lahore, Gujranwala, Kasur, Sheikhupura | The airport with the restored London service; confirm which terminal your flight uses before sharing pickup details |
| Jinnah International, Karachi | KHI | Karachi and southern Sindh | Karachi lies south of the Sindh area the FCDO advises against |
| Sialkot International | SKT | Sialkot, Gujrat, Kharian, Daska | Pakistan’s privately owned international airport, about 14 km west of Sialkot city, served mainly by Gulf-connecting flights |
Whichever airport you use, the FCDO’s general advice is to allow enough time for check-in and security on departure. On arrival, the gap between landing and the arrivals hall varies with queues at immigration and baggage belts, which is why a driver should be tracking your flight rather than working to a fixed clock. If a relative is also coming to meet you, our guide to meeting family at Islamabad or Sialkot airport explains how the pickup works at the door.
Money: cards, cash and the rupee
Pakistan runs on the rupee (PKR), and cash still matters far more than it does in the UK, especially for small purchases, tips and anything outside the big cities. Three facts are worth knowing before you pack:
- ATMs: the US State Department notes that city ATMs work with US bank cards but may often be out of service, charge high fees or cap withdrawals. Tell your UK bank you are travelling, and carry two cards from different banks.
- Taking foreign cash in: the State Department lists no maximum limit on entry. If you carry a significant sum, keep the paperwork and follow any declaration form handed out on arrival.
- Taking foreign cash out: the same source lists exit limits of USD 5,000 per adult per trip (USD 30,000 per year) and USD 2,500 per minor per trip (USD 15,000 per year). These are the kind of figures that change, so check the current position before a trip where you expect to carry money home.
Phone and messaging on arrival
Most UK travellers land, switch on roaming and message the family on WhatsApp from the belt. That works if your UK plan covers Pakistan; many do not, or charge heavily, so check before you fly. For a longer stay a local SIM is cheaper, but the State Department says tourists cannot buy SIM cards at Islamabad airport: they need an official store of a mobile operator, which registers and activates the SIM.
Handsets are regulated too. The PTA’s Device Identification Registration and Blocking System exists so that only approved, registered devices run on Pakistani networks, and the PTA states that its registration facility is accessible only within Pakistan. If you plan to put a Pakistani SIM into your own UK handset, read the PTA’s current rules for visitors before you fly, because the fix cannot be done from Manchester.
The ride from the airport: who books, who pays, who travels
The FCDO’s transport advice for Pakistan is specific. It recommends using taxis only from reputable, licensed companies where you call for a taxi and the operator contacts a driver, and it advises against street taxis, e-taxis and app-based taxi services. For a UK family landing after an overnight flight, that points towards one thing: a car arranged in advance through an operator who assigns the driver, rather than a negotiation on the kerb.
Pre-booking only helps if the three roles are clear. In most UK households they are held by different people:
- The booker enters the request: flight number, airport, terminal if known, passenger count, bags, child seats and the drop-off address in Pakistan. This is often the most organised sibling, sitting in Birmingham or Bradford.
- The payer agrees the price and settles it. Sometimes this is the booker, sometimes a relative in the UK, sometimes family in Pakistan paying in rupees. Decide before the request is sent, because it changes which contact details the operator needs.
- The traveller is the person the driver actually meets. Their name goes on the sign, their mobile goes on the booking, and they receive the driver’s details.
On iDrive, you send the request and the operations team comes back with a quote and vehicle options; nothing is confirmed until that quote is accepted and a driver is assigned, and availability depends on the date, route and vehicle. Our walkthrough of how to book a taxi in Pakistan from the UK covers the request itself, and the page on booking Pakistan transport before you fly explains the timing for overseas buyers. For airport-specific details, start with Pakistan airport transfers.
What the booking should contain before you leave the UK
- Flight number and date of arrival in Pakistan (not the UK departure date; overnight flights cross midnight).
- The traveller’s full name as it will appear on the name board, and a working mobile number.
- Honest passenger and luggage count. Five adults with wedding luggage is not a saloon job.
- The full drop-off address with a landmark, plus a relative’s local number at that address.
- Who is paying, in which currency, and when.
If the family prefers a warmer, step-by-step version to forward on WhatsApp, our sister service Pakistan Taxi publishes a UK departure checklist for your airport pickup built for exactly that audience.
The one-page checklist, with an owner for every line
Print this or paste it into the family group. The owner column is the point: one name per line, and that person confirms it is done.
| Item | Owner | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| Passport valid 6+ months from visa application date | Traveller | Expiry date checked against the application date |
| Visa issued, or NICOP/POC valid for the whole stay | Traveller (booker may apply on their behalf) | Visa grant or card in hand, not “applied” |
| Parents’ or spouse’s NADRA cards valid, if needed for a NICOP application | Family member whose card it is | Renewal complete before the traveller applies |
| Children’s documents and consent letter | Accompanying parent | Letter signed, copies packed |
| FCDO advice checked for every place on the itinerary | Booker | Itinerary compared with the current FCDO map |
| Travel insurance that covers the itinerary | Traveller | Policy wording read against the FCDO areas |
| No alcohol or pork products in luggage | Traveller | Bags packed and checked |
| Bank told about travel, two cards, some cash | Traveller | Cards tested, small cash float ready |
| Roaming active or SIM plan decided | Traveller | Plan confirmed with the UK network |
| Airport car requested and quote accepted | Booker | Confirmation received with driver details to follow |
| Payment agreed | Payer | Method, currency and timing agreed in writing |
| Driver name and number shared | Booker to traveller and host relative | Both phones have the details saved |
| Polio certificate position checked for long stays | Traveller | Checked before the return flight is due |
What to know before travelling to Pakistan that no form asks you
The dates that trip people up
Three dates cause more trouble than any document. The arrival date in Pakistan, which is often the day after you leave the UK. The visa end date, which has to cover the whole stay because you need a valid visa or Pakistani ID to leave. And the NICOP expiry, which should outlast the trip with room to spare. Put all three on one line in the family group before anything is booked.
A worked example
Example only: a British-Pakistani couple in Leeds are flying to Islamabad with two children for a family wedding near Jhelum. The father holds a valid NICOP; the mother’s expires during the trip, so she renews it first, after checking her own parents’ cards are valid. The children travel on their own NICOPs. The father’s brother in Leeds books the airport car and pays; the father is named as the traveller; a cousin in Jhelum holds the driver’s number as the local contact. Nobody is guessing on landing day, because every line on the checklist already has a name next to it.
Questions people ask
Do British citizens need a visa for Pakistan?
Yes, unless they hold a valid NICOP or POC. The FCDO says you must apply in advance, and applications are made online through NADRA’s Pakistan Online Visa System.
Can I buy a SIM card at the airport in Pakistan?
Not at Islamabad, according to the US State Department: tourists need an official mobile operator store, because only those stores can register and activate a SIM. Plan on roaming until you reach one.
Is it safe to book a car for the airport pickup before I fly?
The FCDO recommends licensed operators where the company assigns the driver, and advises against street taxis and app-based taxis. Pre-arranging through an operator fits that advice; check the driver’s name and number before departure.
When your documents are sorted and the owners are agreed, send the airport request through the iDrive booking page with the flight number, passenger count and drop-off address, and wait for the quote before you treat anything as confirmed.
