If your Skardu flight is cancelled, you have three realistic moves: take the airline’s rebooking onto the next flight, ask for a refund and go by road, or wait a day in Islamabad and try again. Which one is right depends on things you can settle before you ever reach the airport: how many spare days your trip has, whether the road via Babusar Pass is open that month, and whether a car and driver are already lined up to leave the same morning. A Skardu flight cancelled for weather is not a rare event. The route flies into one of the most demanding mountain approaches in the country, and the decision to scrub a departure is often taken close to departure time, after passengers have already checked in. The travellers who lose least are the ones who treated the road as a planned option, not an emergency.

This guide sets out how to build that fallback: what to check with the airline, what the road involves, which route your insurer may care about, and how to hold a vehicle on standby without paying for two journeys.

Decision summary: what to do when a Skardu flight is cancelled

Most of the choice comes down to time and season. Use this as a first filter, then read the detail below.

Your situation Sensible default Why
Two or more spare days, fixed return flight from Islamabad Rebook onto the next flight Road takes most of two days each way; one lost flight day is cheaper than two driving days.
No spare days, summer season, Babusar road open Switch to road the same morning An early departure via Naran and Babusar can still reach Skardu on the second day.
Winter or spring, Babusar closed Rebook and wait, or rethink the trip The only road link is the full Karakoram Highway, which carries the heaviest security advisories.
Group booking, wedding or trek start date that cannot move Pre-arrange road standby before you fly Finding seats together for a large group on the next flights is much harder than finding one or two.
Travelling on UK or similar insurance Check the route against your government’s advice first Some policies are invalidated on sections your government advises against.

Why Islamabad to Skardu flights cancel, and when the call is made

Skardu sits in the Indus valley ringed by high ground, and every approach depends on cloud, wind and visibility along the valleys the aircraft has to fly through. Gilgit, in a narrower valley, faces the same problem. You do not need an aviation manual to plan around this. The UK government’s safety and security advice for Pakistan puts it bluntly: flights to and from the mountainous north are frequently delayed or cancelled because of extreme weather.

In practical terms, there are three points at which your flight can fall over:

  1. The evening before or early morning. The airline reviews the forecast and may cancel ahead of time. This is the best outcome for you, because it leaves a full day to act.
  2. At the airport, before boarding. The departure is held while the crew waits for an improvement at the destination, then cancelled. You are in the terminal at Islamabad, often mid-morning, with the daylight window for a road start shrinking.
  3. In the air. The aircraft reaches the valley, cannot land and flies back. Less common, but it costs you most of the day.

Seasonality matters as well as daily weather: PIA has suspended its Lahore and Karachi services to Gilgit and Skardu for winter before, relaunching them in March as the weather improved, as Dawn reported when those services resumed in 2022. Schedules change from season to season, so check the current timetable directly with the carrier rather than relying on last year’s pattern.

What the pia skardu flight weather pattern means for planning

Two habits follow from all this. Book the earliest flight of the day where you can, because a morning cancellation still leaves time for a road start or a same-day retry. And never schedule a Skardu arrival on the same day as something that cannot move, such as a trek start with a porter team, a family event or an onward international connection on the return.

Islamabad to Skardu flight cancelled: what to do at the counter

The first twenty minutes after a cancellation decide a lot. Seats on the next flights go to whoever reaches the counter or the call centre first, and a cancelled departure can put a full aircraft’s worth of people into the same queue. Do these things in order:

  1. Get the cancellation reason in writing or on screen. Weather cancellations and operational cancellations can be treated differently by airlines and insurers. Ask the agent what code or reason has been recorded against your booking.
  2. Ask for the next confirmed seat, not a standby listing. A waitlist position on tomorrow’s flight is not the same as a seat. Ask which flight you are confirmed on and note the new booking reference if it changes.
  3. Ask about a refund of the unused sector. If you decide to drive, you want to know now whether the flight value comes back as cash, a credit or not at all. Rules differ by airline and fare type.
  4. Check the return leg. On some bookings, not flying the outbound sector can affect the return. Confirm that your Skardu to Islamabad flight stays live if you go up by road.
  5. Keep your bags in view. If you are switching to road, make sure checked luggage is returned to you before you leave the terminal.

PIA lets you manage a booking and check in online through its official website, which is also where current timetables and contact routes sit. Airblue and AirSial have their own channels. None of the airlines publishes a single rule that covers every weather cancellation on the northern routes, so treat the conditions on your own ticket as the only reliable answer and ask the questions above explicitly.

Rebooking policies to check before you buy the ticket

You will get a better outcome if you know these answers before you fly, not after:

  • Is the fare refundable, and does a weather cancellation change that?
  • Is a free change allowed onto a later date if the airline cancels?
  • Does the airline offer hotel accommodation in Islamabad after a weather cancellation, or only after an operational one?
  • If you are booked through an agent or on a combined itinerary, who handles the rebooking: the airline or the seller?
  • For international arrivals connecting in Islamabad, does the domestic ticket sit on the same booking as your long-haul flight, or is it separate? A separate ticket usually means you carry the risk of any knock-on.

The road option: route, duration and the overnight stop

Skardu is reached by road from the Karakoram Highway at Jaglot. From there the Skardu road, designated S-1, follows the Indus gorge for about 167 km. An upgrade widening it from about 3.6 metres to 7.3 metres and easing sharp bends, executed by the Frontier Works Organization, was reported as about 83 per cent complete by an NHA official in January 2023, according to Associated Press of Pakistan. It is still a gorge road, exposed to rockfall and landslides.

Getting from Islamabad to Jaglot is where the real choice lies. There are two ways to reach Chilas, the town on the Indus that makes the natural overnight stop on a two-day drive:

Route to Chilas Via Season Key constraint
Babusar route (N-15) Motorway to Mansehra, then Kaghan valley, Naran and Babusar Pass Summer only; closed by snow for much of the year Pass at about 13,700 ft; accidents are a recurring problem on the Babusar to Chilas descent
Full Karakoram Highway Mansehra, Battagram, Besham, Dasu Year-round, subject to landslides Longer, and the section the UK government advises against all travel on

According to Dawn’s reporting on the Babusar reopening in 2025, the Mansehra to Diamer run takes about seven hours via Babusar against roughly fourteen via the Karakoram Highway. The same report notes that the pass usually stays closed from November into early summer, that the NHA clears the snow and glaciers before reopening, and that Diamer Police run check posts at the top. The timing varies every year: in 2026 the road reopened on 25 May after a seven-month closure, as ProPakistani reported. Our own route notes on when Babusar Top and the KKH open and close go into the seasonal pattern in more detail.

The advisory problem for foreign and dual-national travellers

This is the point many road fallback plans miss. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel on the Karakoram Highway between Mansehra and Chilas via Battagram, Besham City, Dasu and Sazin, up to the junction with the N15. Travelling against that advice can invalidate travel insurance. Other governments publish their own positions, and they change, so check yours on the day you plan the trip and again before you drive.

The consequence is simple. For a traveller who needs to stay inside FCDO advice, the road fallback to Skardu exists in practice only while the Babusar route is open. Outside that window, a cancelled flight means waiting for the next one. Building that fact into the plan is far better than discovering it at the check-in desk in February.

What a realistic road day looks like

We plan the road fallback as a two-day drive: Islamabad to Chilas on day one, Chilas to Skardu via Jaglot on day two. Treat it as two full days in the vehicle, and plan it for daylight. The same FCDO guidance notes that local driving standards are erratic, especially at night, that landslides frequently block roads in remote areas, and that the N15 between Chilas and Babusar is inaccessible at some times of year. Mountain roads leave little margin for a tired driver.

Build slack in. When heavy rain triggered landslides in June 2026, sections of the Karakoram Highway in Diamer and the Baltistan road near Skardu were temporarily blocked; a Gilgit-Baltistan tourism official told Dawn that such blockages are usually cleared within 24 to 48 hours. The same report described a traveller held for around 38 hours near Chilas by road blockades unconnected to the weather. The Pakistan Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority issue warnings ahead of heavy rain, and checking them on the morning you set out is not optional in monsoon season.

For a fuller comparison of both modes before you commit to either, see our guide on whether to fly or drive from Islamabad to Skardu.

Northern areas flight backup plan: arranging a standby car

The expensive mistake is to book a car for the full road journey “just in case” and then fly. The equally expensive mistake is to book nothing and try to find a suitable vehicle and an experienced mountain driver at ten in the morning on a cancellation day, alongside everyone else from the same flight. A standby arrangement sits between the two.

A standby is a conditional request: a vehicle and driver held against a specific date, activated only if your flight does not go. What it costs and how it works depends entirely on the operator and the season, so the value lies in agreeing the terms in writing before you fly. These are the terms worth settling:

  • The trigger. What counts as activation: a confirmed cancellation, a delay beyond a set number of hours, or your own decision to switch?
  • The decision deadline. The latest time you can call it and still leave that day. Because the drive needs daylight, the deadline is usually early. Ask the operator what time they need to hear from you.
  • The release fee. If you fly and the car is not needed, is there a charge for holding it? Is it fixed, or a share of the journey price?
  • The pickup point. Islamabad airport, your hotel in Islamabad or Rawalpindi, or a family address. Agree it in advance so the driver is not waiting in the wrong place.
  • The vehicle. Seats, luggage space and whether the vehicle suits the mountain sections. A saloon that is fine for motorway transfers may be the wrong choice for a loaded family on the Skardu road.
  • The overnight. Who books and pays for the driver’s night in Chilas, and whether your own room is part of the arrangement or separate.
  • The return. Whether the car returns empty or stays with you in Skardu, and how that changes the price.

Once a request is in, iDrive’s booking team reviews the details and comes back with what is available and on what terms. Nothing is fixed until you have those terms in writing and have accepted them. You can start that process through the iDrive journey request page, noting the flight number and saying that you want a standby rather than a firm road booking.

Gilgit flight cancelled: the road option is a parallel case

Everything above applies to Gilgit with two differences. The first is the airport itself: Gilgit falls under the same FCDO warning about weather-hit northern flights, and its tighter valley approach gives crews little room when cloud sits low, so plan on it being no more reliable than Skardu. The second is the road. Gilgit lies just off the Karakoram Highway beyond Jaglot, so the road journey follows the same pattern to Chilas and then continues up the KKH instead of turning off along the Indus towards Skardu. The Babusar question and the advisory question are identical.

That shared geography opens one useful option. If your final destination is Hunza rather than Gilgit town, a flight cancellation into Gilgit does not change the road plan much: you were going to drive the last stretch anyway. Our page on a car with driver from Islamabad to Hunza covers that longer journey.

Constraints worth putting in writing

A road fallback only works if the practical details hold. Before you travel, confirm these with whoever is providing the vehicle:

  • Driver experience on mountain roads. Ask whether the driver has driven the Babusar and Skardu road sections recently, not just the motorway.
  • Documents. Foreign nationals should carry their passport and visa, and dual nationals their NICOP or CNIC as well, because police check posts operate along these routes.
  • Luggage limits. Trekking bags, duffels and family suitcases fill a vehicle faster than people expect. State the number and size of bags when you ask for a vehicle.
  • Connectivity. Do not assume continuous mobile coverage in the mountain sections. Agree how you and the operator will stay in contact if the phone goes quiet.
  • Arrival handover. If you land in Skardu later after a rebooking, you still need a ride from the airport. Our Skardu airport transfer page explains how that pickup is requested.

Once you are in Skardu, a local vehicle for day trips is a separate request from the road journey up. If you are planning Shigar, Khaplu or Deosai days, see car with driver in Skardu.

If family members are meeting you in Islamabad or collecting relatives before the northern leg, our sister service Pakistan Taxi has a practical checklist for planning an onward road journey after landing in Islamabad, written for passengers and families rather than tour planners.

Costs and trade-offs, stated plainly

For a solo traveller with a flexible fortnight, rebooking is usually enough. For a family with fixed dates, a trekking group with a start day, or anyone whose trip ends with a long-haul flight from Islamabad, the standby is the cheaper insurance.

If you want iDrive to look at a specific plan, send the flight details, dates, passenger count and luggage through the journey request form, and say that you are asking for a road standby for a Skardu or Gilgit flight. The team will reply with what can be arranged and on what terms; nothing is confirmed until you have agreed those terms.

Questions people ask

What should I do if my flight to Skardu is cancelled due to weather?

Get a confirmed seat on the next flight or a clear answer on refunds first, then decide whether to wait or drive. If the Babusar route is open and your dates are fixed, a road start early the next morning is a realistic option.

How long does the road from Islamabad to Skardu take?

Plan it as two full days, with an overnight in Chilas. Dawn has reported the Mansehra to Diamer leg at about seven hours via Babusar against about fourteen via the full Karakoram Highway, and the Jaglot to Skardu road adds about 167 km.

Is there a road option if my Gilgit flight is cancelled?

Yes. The route follows the same pattern to Chilas and then continues up the Karakoram Highway. The same seasonal and advisory limits apply as for Skardu.

Can I drive to Skardu in winter if my flight is cancelled?

Only via the full Karakoram Highway, because Babusar Pass is closed by snow for much of the year. The UK government advises against all travel on the Mansehra to Chilas section, so many foreign and dual-national travellers will have no compliant road option in winter.
