The short version of the Pakistan business visa requirements: you apply online through NADRA’s visa portal, you upload a passport scan and photograph, you show that the Pakistani company inviting you is properly registered (an SECP or Chamber of Commerce certificate), and you attach an invitation. For most applicants that invitation is an E-BIL, an electronic business invitation letter issued by a Pakistani chamber of commerce or trade body through NADRA’s E-BIL system. NADRA lists processing at 24 working hours for nationalities on its Business Visa List and four working weeks for everyone else, and it grants business visas of up to five years with multiple entries.
That covers the visa. What most checklists leave out is the person behind the letter. The company that invites you becomes, whether it plans to or not, your first point of contact in Pakistan: the name on your paperwork, the number an immigration officer or a driver may call, and the office that knows where you are sleeping. This guide walks through the applicant’s side of the process and then the step careful travellers add: choosing a host contact who signs, who answers the phone, and whose details match your transport booking.
Pakistan business visa requirements at a glance
NADRA’s Business Visa page is the primary source, and it is worth reading on the day you apply because categories and timelines are revised from time to time. As published there, the file has five parts.

Two general rules sit on top of that list. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office says your passport must have an expiry date at least six months after the date of your visa application, and that you must apply in advance rather than turn up and hope (FCDO entry requirements for Pakistan). The US State Department’s Pakistan page phrases the passport rule as six months beyond your arrival date and adds that two blank pages are required. Different wording, same trap: meet the stricter reading of both and the question never arises.
If you hold a NICOP
British-Pakistani and American-Pakistani dual nationals often do not need a visa at all. The FCDO states that holders of a valid National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis can enter without a visa and stay for an unlimited period, and the State Department says the same for NICOP and Pakistan Origin Card holders. If your card has lapsed, renewing it is usually the simpler job than assembling a business visa file.
What the E-BIL is, and who can issue it
The E-BIL is not a letter your host types on company letterhead and emails over. It is a record created inside NADRA’s E-BIL portal, which exists to issue and verify business invitations electronically. Three points on that portal matter to a visitor.
- The issuer is a chamber or trade body. Letters come through Pakistan’s Chambers of Commerce and Industry and trade bodies. The portal is explicit that issuing the letter is “the prerogative of the issuing authority”, which means a request can be declined.
- The chamber’s fee is separate. Any fee is paid directly to the chamber or trade body, independently of the E-BIL system, and proof of that payment is a required document in the application.
- Coverage is wide. The portal lists nationals of 190 countries as eligible for incoming invitations. It also runs a second track for Pakistani nationals travelling abroad, which is why you will see two categories on the landing page.
In practice this makes the host company’s chamber membership the hinge of the whole process. Before anyone fills in a form, ask your host one direct question: which chamber or trade body are you a member of, and is the membership current? A host that has to go looking for the answer is a host that will need more lead time.
The portal lists its office as the 2nd Floor, State Life Tower, Islamabad, open 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. Pakistan’s working week matters here: a request sent from London on a Friday afternoon will sit untouched until Monday morning Pakistan time.
Other routes to an invitation
NADRA also accepts recommendation letters from bodies outside Pakistan. They suit different visitors.

For investors, the Board of Investment runs a separate set of e-services, including work visas and branch or liaison office registration. That is a different product from a business visa. If the trip is really a posting or paid work in Pakistan rather than meetings and site visits, ask about the work visa before you apply, not after.
Timelines and validity: how far ahead to start
NADRA publishes four processing times for this category. Read them as working time, not calendar time.
- Business Visa List countries: 24 hours (working hours).
- Countries not on the list: four weeks (working days).
- Reko Diq project visitors: 24 hours (working hours).
- Extensions: four weeks (working days).
The list itself changes, so look up your nationality on the portal rather than relying on a colleague’s experience from two years ago. The gap between the two headline figures is the real planning variable. A visitor on the list can, in principle, apply the week of travel. A visitor who is not on it should treat six weeks as the practical floor once you add the E-BIL, the chamber’s own turnaround and a margin for a document being sent back.
A worked example
This is an illustration, not a quote of anyone’s real timetable. Suppose a Manchester buyer wants to be at a Sialkot factory on a Tuesday in March, and her nationality is not on the Business Visa List.
- Week minus eight: she asks the factory which chamber it belongs to and for its SECP or chamber certificate.
- Week minus seven: the E-BIL request goes in; the fee is paid directly to the chamber and the receipt is saved as a PDF.
- Week minus six: with the E-BIL issued, she submits the online visa application.
- Weeks minus six to minus two: NADRA’s four working weeks run; she books nothing non-refundable yet.
- Week minus two: visa in hand, she books flights, hotel and ground transport, using the same dates and names as the letter.
On validity, NADRA says business visas can be granted for up to five years with multiple entries. “Up to” is doing a lot of work in that sentence: the period you receive is what the grant says, not what the page advertises. Read your grant before you plan repeat trips on it, and diarise its expiry.
Overstaying has a practical sting. The FCDO notes that you need an unexpired visa, a Pakistani identity card or a Pakistani passport to leave the country, and that if your visa has expired you must apply online for an exit permit before departing. Extensions are also handled online, but at four working weeks they are not a same-week fix for a trip that runs long.
Safety advice still applies to a business trip
A visa is permission to enter, not advice about where to go. Check the FCDO’s Pakistan travel advice against every city on your agenda before the E-BIL names it. At the time of writing, the FCDO advises against all travel to Balochistan, to a long list of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts that includes Peshawar city and Swat, to stretches of the Karakoram Highway and the N45, and to within 10 miles of the Afghan border and the Line of Control. It advises against all but essential travel to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, to Sindh from Nawabshah northwards, to Dera Ghazi Khan, and to within 5 miles of the India border (with named exceptions).
Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi are not in those restricted lists, which is one reason most first business visits are built around them. The FCDO also warns that travel insurance can be invalidated if you travel against its advice. The US State Department rates Pakistan at Level 3, “reconsider travel”, with Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at Level 4, “do not travel”. If a meeting is proposed in an advised-against area, the professional response is to move the meeting, not to find a clever route to it.
Choosing the host contact: who signs, and who answers the phone
A host company letter for Pakistan visa purposes names an organisation, but organisations do not pick up phones at 03:40 when a flight lands early. Somebody inside that company will. Decide who, in writing, before the application goes in. There are usually two roles, and they are rarely the same person.
The signatory
This is the director or authorised officer whose company registration backs the invitation. Their job is formal: confirm the company, confirm the purpose, confirm the dates. They do not need to know your flight number, and you should not expect them to.
The operational contact
This is the person who will actually be reachable while you are in the country: often an office manager, a procurement lead or the engineer you are visiting. Choose them on four tests.
- Reachable on your arrival day and time. A contact who is travelling that week, or whose office closes for Friday prayers just as you land, is a weak choice for that slot.
- Carries a Pakistani mobile with WhatsApp. Drivers, hotel front desks and meeting-room receptions in Pakistan coordinate heavily by WhatsApp. An email-only contact slows everything.
- Knows the addresses. Factory gates, head office floors, the site office behind the site office. Pakistani commercial addresses often need a landmark to be findable.
- Has authority to change plans. If a meeting moves from Gulberg to the Quaid-e-Azam Industrial Estate, this person can say yes to the change without escalating.
Put both names, both mobile numbers and a landline for the company in a single note you carry offline. If your phone dies in the arrivals hall, a printed sheet with the host’s details is worth more than any app.
Aligning the letter with your booking
This is where visitors lose time. The visa file, the E-BIL, the hotel reservation and the car booking are prepared by four different people, and each one spells your name slightly differently. None of that is fatal on its own. Together it produces a driver holding a sign for someone who does not exist and a hotel that cannot find the reservation.

The practical fix is one master sheet. Your host fills it in once, you check it against your passport, and every booking is made from it. When the host later forwards the sheet to a driver or a hotel, nobody retypes anything.
When you book ground transport, name the operational contact as the local contact on the booking. If a flight is delayed or a meeting overruns, the driver or dispatcher then has someone in Pakistan to call who can say “wait” or “go ahead”, rather than trying a UK mobile that is switched off at 35,000 feet.
Meeting-day car hire for visiting teams
Once the visa is granted, transport becomes the part of the trip you control most directly. Three patterns cover most business visits, and the right one depends on how many people are travelling and how fixed the agenda is.

Is there a separate Pakistan business visa for British citizens?
No separate product. British citizens apply for the same business visa through NADRA’s online system. Check whether your nationality is on NADRA’s Business Visa List, because that decides whether processing is quoted at 24 working hours or four working weeks. British-Pakistanis with a valid NICOP do not need a visa.
Can my host just write me a letter on company letterhead?
Not on its own. NADRA’s business visa page asks for an invitation from the business that is recommended by the relevant Pakistani trade organisation, and points you to the E-Business Invitation Letter System to get it. Recommendation letters from your home chamber, or from BOI’s honorary investment counsellor or a Commercial Attaché, are the listed alternatives.
