Guaranteed model car rental: when you can lock the exact car in Pakistan

A guaranteed model car rental in Pakistan is possible, but only in a narrow set of cases, and never by default. On a standard managed booking you confirm a vehicle class first (economy hatch, executive sedan, VIP SUV and so on), and the exact car is fixed later, at assignment, when a named partner commits a specific vehicle with its registration number. You can realistically lock an exact model when three things line up: the booking has enough lead time, the model is plentiful or the partner has already named the car, and the reason for wanting it is concrete (a wedding photograph, a protocol convoy that must match, a month-long hire where you will live with the car). Outside those cases, “choose your exact car” is a promise nobody in the market can keep reliably, and you should be wary of anyone who makes it casually.

The short answer, as a decision summary

• Airport transfer or single intercity run: book the class. The model rarely changes the outcome; boot space and seat count do.
• Wedding baraat car or matched convoy: a model (and often colour) request is reasonable. Ask early, and expect it to be confirmed only when a partner names the actual vehicle.
• VIP or protocol SUV: a model request is normal, because the brief often specifies something like a Land Cruiser rather than “a large SUV”. Confirmation still comes at assignment.
• Monthly car and driver: you are effectively choosing one car for weeks, so it is sensible to see and agree the specific vehicle before the hire starts.
• Short-notice anything: take the class. A model demand made the night before narrows supply to almost nothing.

Why class-first is the standard, not a dodge

The international car-hire industry settled this question decades ago. The ACRISS code, the four-letter string you see on most rental bookings abroad, describes a vehicle by category, body type, transmission and drive, and fuel and air-conditioning. According to ACRISS’s own explanation of its car codes, the first letter reflects size, cost, power and luxury, and the whole system exists so that travel professionals and customers can compare vehicle types. It groups cars that do the same job; it does not name a make and model. That is where the phrase “or similar” comes from.

iDrive works the same way. The iDrive vehicle classes page says plainly that it publishes a class and supplies that vehicle or a similar approved one in the same class, and each class lists representative models rather than a single guaranteed badge. There are sound operational reasons for this in Pakistan specifically:

• Supply is distributed. A managed platform draws on many independent owners and drivers. The Honda City available at 04:00 near Allama Iqbal International is not necessarily the one that was free when you booked a fortnight ago.
• Cars are working assets. A vehicle booked for your Saturday may be finishing a Friday run to Multan. If that run overruns, a class booking lets the operator swap in a comparable car without breaking your plans.
• Fitness and age rules apply per car. A class is only honest if every car in it meets the same age and condition threshold. Assigning late lets the operator send the car that passes those checks that week, not the one that passed them a month ago.
• The model is rarely the real requirement. What a family of five with four large cases needs is seats and boot space. Two cars with different badges can meet that equally well; two cars with the same badge can differ if one carries a CNG cylinder in the boot.

So the useful question is not “can I choose my rental car model?” but “does my trip have a reason that justifies narrowing supply to one model?” Most trips do not. Some genuinely do.

Class, preferred model, or locked model: the three levels of promise

It helps to separate three commitments that get blurred in sales copy. They carry different weights, and you should know which one you have.

Most confusion comes from a preferred model being read as a locked one. If your confirmation says “Toyota Corolla or similar”, you hold a class booking with a preference. A lock needs different wording, covered further down.

Cases where a guaranteed model car rental is realistic

A model lock earns its cost when the model itself is part of the outcome, not just the means of getting somewhere. Four situations come up repeatedly.

The wedding car and the baraat convoy

For a groom’s car, the vehicle appears in photographs and video that the family will keep for decades, and it is often decorated to a design agreed weeks earlier. Decorators need to know the body shape; a floral arrangement planned for a sedan bonnet does not transfer neatly to an SUV. For a convoy, the point is uniformity: six matching white cars read very differently from six assorted ones. Here a specific car model rental is a reasonable ask, and so is a colour. Raise it at the first enquiry, because the operator may need to assemble matching vehicles from several owners. VIP and protocol SUVs

Protocol movements, visiting delegations and security-conscious clients often specify a vehicle by name because the brief was written that way: a Land Cruiser, not “a large SUV”. Sometimes the reason is practical (ground clearance, cabin height for elderly passengers, a known boot configuration for equipment), sometimes it is about presence at an arrival. In either case, the VIP SUV class is where the request starts, and the lock is completed when a partner names the vehicle and its registration. Generations matter here: a Land Cruiser 200 and a Land Cruiser 300 are different vehicles, so if the generation matters to you, say so, rather than assuming the model name covers it.

Monthly car and driver hire

On a month-long hire, you are not booking a trip; you are choosing a car you will sit in most days. Exact car model booking makes sense here, and in practice it usually means approving one particular vehicle rather than a model in the abstract. Specific functional needs

Occasionally the model is a proxy for a hard requirement: a particular seat layout for a wheelchair transfer, a boot that takes a folded pram plus four cases, or a vehicle a traveller has driven before and is comfortable with on a self-drive hire. In these cases, state the requirement first and the model second. An operator can often meet the requirement with more than one model, which gives you the substance of the guarantee with more supply behind it.

What a model guarantee costs you: price, lead time and flexibility

A lock is not free, even where no surcharge appears on the quote. The cost shows up in three places.

1. Lead time. Narrowing from a class to one model shrinks the pool of vehicles that can serve you. The less common the model, the earlier you need to ask. For a wedding convoy of matching cars, asking weeks ahead rather than days is the difference between a choice and a scramble. Pricing and notice periods vary by city, season and model, so treat any figure you hear as specific to that quote.
2. Price. Where the model sits at the top of its class, a lock may effectively price you into the next class up, or the partner may quote more to hold that car for you and turn down other work. Ask whether the quote for the locked model differs from the class rate, and why.
3. Flexibility. A class booking can absorb a breakdown, a late-running previous job or a date change without drama. A locked booking has fewer fallback options. If your dates are still moving, lock late, not early.

A worked example, labelled as such: suppose a family arriving in Islamabad in December wants a groom’s car for a Lahore wedding and a separate airport pickup. The sensible split is a class booking for the airport run and a locked model only for the wedding car. Locking both doubles the fragility for no gain; the airport run’s only real requirements are seats, luggage and punctuality.

The two-stage confirmation: what you should receive at assignment

A managed booking confirms in two steps. At booking you hold a class, a date, a route and a price. At assignment, a named partner commits a real driver and a real vehicle. It is the second step that turns any model request into something checkable.

iDrive’s draft Terms of Hire, currently published for legal review, describe a booking as confirmed only once the customer receives the assigned partner’s details, including where applicable the partner’s photo, the vehicle’s registration number and the vehicle class and details. Until then the request is provisional. Whatever the final wording, that principle is the one to hold any operator to: no named car, no locked model.

At assignment, a model-locked booking should give you, at minimum:

• Make, model and generation (for example, “Toyota Land Cruiser 300”, not “Land Cruiser”).
• Registration number, exactly as it appears on the plate.
• Colour, if colour was part of the request.
• A recent photograph of the actual vehicle, not a brochure image, for weddings and protocol work.
• Driver name and photo, and a contact route for the day.

The registration is the anchor. In Sindh, the Excise department runs an online motor vehicle record search where anyone can enter a registration number exactly as shown on the plate; other provinces run their own registration systems. A check like this is not a substitute for the operator’s own vetting, but it gives a family abroad something concrete to compare against the car that turns up.

On the day, check the plate against the confirmation before anyone gets in or any decoration goes on. A mismatch is far easier to fix at the kerb than after the car has been dressed with flowers and the baraat is waiting.

What happens if the locked car fails

Cars break down, get caught in traffic, or come back from a previous job with a flat tyre. A guarantee that does not say what happens next is not much of a guarantee. The remedies, broadly, fall into a ladder:

1. Same model, different vehicle. Best outcome for a wedding or convoy; depends on whether a second example is reachable in time.
2. Equivalent or higher model in the same class or above, at no extra charge. This is the general standard in international car hire: the European Consumer Centre Ireland’s car-hire guidance says that where the booked vehicle is unavailable you should be offered a car with the same specifications and capacity, or better, and advises raising the issue at once with both the rental company and any booking intermediary.
3. A price adjustment, where you accept a substitute that does not meet the locked specification.
4. Cancellation with refund, where no acceptable substitute exists and the model was the point of the booking.

iDrive’s draft terms also address the opposite failure: a car that arrives but does not match the confirmation, such as the wrong vehicle, the wrong class or an unauthorised substitution. The draft proposes that such a booking can be cancelled, with a full refund and/or a replacement at iDrive’s discretion. Because those terms are still under review, rely on the confirmed wording attached to your own booking rather than on the draft.

For weddings, one habit reduces the chance of needing the ladder at all: ask for the car to arrive at the decorator or the family home with a comfortable buffer before departure, not straight at the venue.

Contract wording for model guarantees

The difference between a preference and a guarantee lives in a few words. When you read a confirmation or quote, look for the following, and ask for them to be added if they are missing.

A sound model-lock clause, written in plain terms, covers five things: the named make, model and generation; colour and year range if relevant; the date by which the registration and photo will be sent; the remedy if that vehicle cannot attend; and whether the lock changes the price. If any of those five is missing, you have something closer to a preference.

There is also a consumer-law reason to insist on precise wording. Section 10 of Pakistan’s Competition Act 2010 prohibits deceptive marketing, which the Competition Commission of Pakistan describes as including false or misleading information about the character, properties, suitability for use or quality of goods. A seller who advertises “choose your car rental” and then routinely sends something else is taking a risk that a clear class description avoids. For buyers, the practical lesson is simpler: keep screenshots of what was offered and the written confirmation of what was agreed.

How to ask for an exact model without wasting a week

If your trip genuinely warrants a lock, the request goes faster when it is structured. Put the following in your first message:

1. The reason: wedding photographs, matched convoy, protocol brief, month-long use, a functional need. Reasons let the operator judge which substitutes you would accept.
2. The model and what around it matters: generation, colour, year range, seating layout. Say which of these are firm and which are nice to have.
3. The acceptable fallbacks, in order. “Land Cruiser 300; if not, Land Cruiser 200; if not, Prado 250” is far easier to plan against than a single name.
4. Dates, cities and timings, including where the car must be for decoration or for a security briefing.
5. The deadline by which you need the registration and photo to decide.

Questions people ask

Can I choose my rental car model in Pakistan?

You can request one, and for weddings, VIP SUVs and monthly hire it is often honoured. On a standard booking, though, you book a class and the specific vehicle is confirmed at assignment. Treat the model as locked only once the registration and vehicle details are in writing.

Does “or similar” mean I might get a smaller car?

It should not. “Or similar” means another vehicle in the same class, with comparable capacity. If what arrives is smaller or lower in specification than the class you booked, raise it on the spot and before the journey starts.

How early should I ask for a specific car model?

As early as your plans allow, and earlier for rarer models or matched convoys. There is no single notice period that fits every city and season, so ask the operator what deadline applies to your quote.

Is a model guarantee the same as a colour guarantee?

No. Colour is a separate commitment. If it matters, as it usually does for a baraat convoy, name it in the request and check that it appears in the confirmation.
