Indicative only. The figure we quote for your journey is the one that counts, and once quoted it does not change. What moves a price: the exact addresses at each end, the vehicle the party and luggage actually need, whether the car waits or returns empty, and the motorway toll where one applies.
The road between Islamabad and Lahore is one of the few journeys in Pakistan where the infrastructure does exactly what it promises. The M-2 runs 375 km, six lanes the whole way, from the M-1 junction west of Rawalpindi to Thokar Niaz Baig on the western edge of Lahore. Door to door it works out at roughly 390 km, and a car that leaves on time arrives about four and a half hours later.
What varies is not the road. It is the first twenty minutes and the last twenty minutes: whether the pickup is in an Islamabad sector or deep in Rawalpindi, and whether the destination is Cantt or the Walled City. Those two segments are where an intercity journey is won or lost, and they are the reason a private car with a driver behaves differently from a coach that starts and ends at a terminal.
The M-2, end to end
The motorway carries five service areas, spaced roughly 60 to 80 km apart at Sukheki, Sial, Bhera, Kalar Kahar and Chakri, each with fuel, a mosque, washrooms, workshops and branded food. Bhera is the conventional halfway stop and the one most drivers will suggest. The single piece of real gradient on the route is the Salt Range descent at Kalar Kahar, which is also the stretch where a tired driver in a heavily loaded car is most likely to be noticed for the wrong reasons. M-tag electronic tolling was introduced in December 2021, so the toll plazas no longer swallow ten minutes each way.
The toll itself is the one number on this page that can be stated without qualification. The National Highway Authority raised the end-to-end car rate by seven per cent with effect from 5 July 2026, to Rs 1,430 one way for a car, jeep or taxi, and that rate holds until 23 April 2027 under the concession agreement with MORE. A wagon pays Rs 2,390, a coaster Rs 3,350 and a full-size bus Rs 4,770. If you are moving a group, the toll alone on a coaster is more than double a car’s, each way, before anyone has bought a litre of diesel.
What the drive actually costs to run
Fuel is the variable that makes every published Pakistani fare go stale. As of the OGRA notification effective 26 August 2026, petrol is Rs 343.10 a litre and high-speed diesel Rs 371.80. A year earlier petrol was Rs 264.61. That is a thirty per cent movement in twelve months, and it is why any fare table you find online without a date on it should be treated as fiction.
It also explains something worth knowing before you compare quotes. inDrive’s own City to City page recommends about Rs 5,760 for Islamabad to Lahore. Subtract the Rs 1,430 toll and what is left barely covers the petrol for a 375 km run, let alone the empty return leg the driver has to make. A price at that level is a one-way, one-direction number for a driver who happens to be going that way anyway. It is a genuine option and we will not pretend otherwise, but it is not the same product as a vetted driver whose return is priced in.
Starting in Islamabad or Rawalpindi
Islamabad addresses are coordinates. F-6, G-11, H-8: a driver can find any of them cold. Rawalpindi is the opposite, and the same nominal distance through Saddar, Raja Bazaar or the older cantonment streets can take twice as long. If your pickup is on the Rawalpindi side, give the nearest main road and a landmark alongside the street address, and expect the driver to suggest a departure time that looks unnecessarily early. It usually is not.
Since February 2026 the Deputy Commissioner Islamabad has required every ride-hailing driver operating in the capital to register through the City Islamabad app with their CNIC and vehicle registration, and to display an issued QR code on the windscreen. That is a useful piece of context for a visitor: the city itself has decided that an unidentified driver is a problem worth legislating about. For a pre-booked journey we send the driver’s photograph and the vehicle registration before pickup, so the check happens before the car arrives rather than at the kerb.
Arriving in Lahore
Every M-2 journey ends at Thokar Niaz Baig, and Thokar is one of the pinch points Lahore Traffic Police named when it reorganised the city into six management sectors in January 2025. The others worth planning around are Babu Sabu Chowk, Multan Chungi, and the airport-side cluster of Burki Road and DHA Phases 6 to 8. Thokar is also where most intercity coaches terminate, which matters more than it sounds: it is over 20 km from Gulberg, so a bus fare is not the whole cost of a bus journey.
The other piece of Lahore geography that catches people out is the airport. Allama Iqbal sits on the eastern side of the city, so DHA and Cantt are the near side and the Walled City, Anarkali and Mall Road are the long haul across town. That is the reverse of what most first-time visitors assume, and it changes which end of the day you want to be travelling.
Plan the connection, not just the drive
Four and a half hours is the motorway time in normal conditions. Winter fog on the Punjab plain, an incident on the Salt Range descent or a bad hour at Thokar can all add to it. If this journey connects with a flight or a fixed appointment, build in a margin rather than booking to the minute.
Tell us the journey and we will price it. A submitted request is not a booking until availability, price and terms are confirmed.

Every way of making this journey
We are one row in this table, and not the cheapest one. Here is what the alternatives actually cost and what each of them asks of you.
| Option | Typical cost | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus, FM Bilal or Skyways | Rs 1,581 - 1,670 | 4 h 33 m | Terminal to terminal. The Lahore end is Thokar, 20 km from Gulberg. |
| Bus, Daewoo Express | Rs 2,670 | 4 h 33 m | The reliability benchmark on this corridor. |
| Bus, Q Connect premium | Rs 5,950 | 4 h 33 m | Costs more than hiring a whole car through inDrive. |
| Train, AC Business | Rs 2,800 - 3,800 | About 4 h 35 m | Booking online needs a Pakistani ID number and a Pakistani card. Fare range is third-party and predates the March 2026 increase. |
| inDrive City to City | Rs 5,000 - 5,760 | About 4 h 30 m | You name a price and a driver accepts. One way, unvetted driver, no return leg. |
| Flying | — | — | There is no scheduled service worth taking. The motorway is faster door to door. |
| iDrive.pk, car with a driver | Rs 25,000 to Rs 88,500 | — | A fixed price once quoted, a vetted driver whose photo and vehicle registration you see before the journey, and a car sized to your party and luggage. Booked before you travel, so it does not depend on having a local SIM when you land. |
Costs for other operators checked on August 31, 2026 and published from their own booking systems, official notices or named third-party sources. Fuel in Pakistan moved from Rs 264.61 a litre in September 2025 to Rs 343.10 by August 2026, so fares here move quickly. Treat these as a guide and confirm with the operator.
Which vehicle actually fits
Seat counts are the manufacturer figures. The passenger and luggage numbers beside them are what the vehicle carries in practice, with the cases people really travel with. If your party is near the limit, tell us the number of bags rather than the number of people, because that is what decides it.
- Suzuki WagonR 3 passengers, 2 cases Short city transfers on a budget. The tall boot helps more than the engine does.
- Toyota Yaris or Corolla 3 to 4 passengers, 2 to 3 large cases The workhorse. City work, airport transfers and the motorway run between Lahore and Islamabad.
- Honda BR-V 5 passengers with luggage, or 7 with almost none Family airport transfers on paved routes. The third row eats the boot, so it suits children or short hops rather than seven adults with cases. Not a mountain vehicle.
- Toyota Fortuner 5 passengers with full luggage, 7 travelling light Rough road and mountain work: Skardu, Hunza, Naran, Babusar. Ask for the diesel four-wheel-drive, because the petrol version is two-wheel-drive.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 4 to 5 passengers with full luggage Protocol and expedition work, and a genuine choice for Skardu and Deosai. It returns 5 to 10 km a litre, which at Rs 343 a litre is the honest reason it costs what it costs.
- Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin 13 passengers plus the driver The group and family vehicle. Gulf arrivals into Sialkot and Peshawar with heavy luggage, tour groups, weddings, long intercity runs.
- Toyota Coaster 25 to 29 passengers with hold luggage Large groups, corporate shuttles and pilgrimage travel. Worth knowing that the motorway toll alone is Rs 3,350 each way against Rs 1,430 for a car.
How booking works
- 01 Tell us the journey Where from, where to, when, how many of you and how much luggage. Precise addresses matter more than you would think, because a Rawalpindi address and an Islamabad address twenty minutes apart are very different journeys.
- 02 We quote a fixed price One figure for the whole journey, with the vehicle class it assumes. If a motorway toll or a waiting period is part of it, you see that too.
- 03 You see the driver and the car Before the journey you get the driver photograph and the vehicle registration, so you know exactly who and what you are looking for.
- 04 You travel At an airport your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign. Check the photograph and the registration plate against what we sent you before you get in.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the Islamabad to Lahore drive take?
About four and a half hours on the M-2 in normal conditions, for roughly 390 km door to door. Winter fog, roadworks and city traffic at either end are the things that add to it.
What is the motorway toll?
Rs 1,430 one way for a car, jeep or taxi, end to end. That is the National Highway Authority rate in force from 5 July 2026 until 23 April 2027. A wagon pays Rs 2,390, a coaster Rs 3,350 and a bus Rs 4,770.
Can the driver collect from Rawalpindi rather than Islamabad?
Yes. Give the full pickup address with a nearby main road and landmark. Rawalpindi addresses take longer to reach than Islamabad sector addresses, so the driver may propose an earlier departure.
Where do drivers stop on the way?
Bhera is the conventional halfway break. There are also service areas at Sukheki, Sial, Kalar Kahar and Chakri, each with fuel, washrooms, a mosque and food. Tell us if you want a specific stop built into the plan.
Is the train a realistic alternative?
It is a real option on this corridor. Subak Raftar runs Lahore 07:00 to Rawalpindi 12:10 in about four hours thirty-five minutes over 290 km of track, and Rawal Express takes around four hours fifteen. The practical obstacle for overseas visitors is booking: Pakistan Railways sells online tickets against a Pakistani national ID number and takes payment only from Pakistani-issued cards.
How do bus fares compare?
Read off Bookme on 31 August 2026 for this corridor: FM Bilal Rs 1,581, Skyways Rs 1,670, Road Master Rs 1,926, Daewoo Express Rs 2,670 and Q Connect Rs 5,950, all showing a scheduled four hours thirty-three minutes. Those are terminal-to-terminal prices and the Lahore terminal is at Thokar.
Should I fly instead?
There is no scheduled Islamabad to Lahore service worth taking. Between check-in, security and two airport transfers, the motorway is faster door to door.
Can I book a same-day return?
Yes, subject to a safe driver duty period and a confirmed waiting arrangement. Tell us how long you expect to be at the Lahore end so the return can be planned properly rather than assumed.
Can we stop somewhere on the way, such as Bhera or Kalar Kahar?
Yes. Add any planned stops to the request. They affect route and timing, so it is better to price them in than to arrange them at the roadside.
Is a van better than two cars for a group?
Usually, but check luggage rather than seats. A Grand Cabin is sold as thirteen passengers plus a driver and takes ten to twelve people comfortably with bags. Two sedans give you more boot space per person but two sets of tolls and two drivers.
Do you use Careem or Uber drivers?
No, and neither does anyone else. Uber left Pakistan entirely on 30 April 2024 and Careem suspended ride-hailing on 18 July 2025. What remains in the app market is inDrive, Yango and Bykea. Our drivers are engaged directly and their photograph and vehicle registration are sent to you before pickup.
What is fixed when you quote me?
The price. Once we have quoted a journey and you have accepted it, that is the figure for the journey as described. If you change the route, the stops or the timing, we requote before anything changes.
Tell us the journey and we will price it
Send the route, the date, the number of travelling and how many cases you have. You will get one price for the whole journey and the vehicle class it assumes. If we cannot cover it properly we will say so rather than take the booking.
