Skardu International is 9.2 km from Skardu, sits at around 7,316 feet, and has two asphalt runways of 11,944 feet, longer than most major international hubs. PIA connects it to Islamabad, Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot and Karachi, and the first international arrival, from Dubai, landed on 14 August 2023. The transfer into town is short and straightforward.
Everything difficult about this airport happens before the transfer.
Why Skardu flights do not go
Skardu operates under visual flight rules. There is no instrument landing system, the terrain makes a precision approach impractical, and aircraft fly a narrow valley and a bend to line up with the runway. The pilot has to see the runway, which means cloud, fog or wind cancels the flight even when the weather in Islamabad is perfect and the aircraft is sitting on the stand.
The seasonal pattern reported by operators who work the route is consistent: cancellations are fewest in summer, June to August; autumn is generally reliable; spring cancellations are common; and winter ones are frequent. There is no credible published cancellation rate for Skardu and we will not quote a percentage we cannot source. PIA typically runs two to three services a day in peak season, the flight itself takes forty-five to fifty-five minutes, and every operator who knows the region gives the same advice: build a buffer day into the itinerary.
What actually happens when you land
Three things are true at every Pakistani airport and none of them appear in the brochure. There are no tourist SIM counters in arrivals, so a phone that worked at the departure gate has no data on landing. Airport cash machines frequently decline foreign cards. And the app-based options that look obvious from a laptop at home need both of those things working before a car will come.
Skardu adds altitude and remoteness to that. Connectivity in Baltistan is patchier than in the plains, and a visitor who lands expecting to sort a car out on arrival is doing so in a small town at the end of a long day, in a place where the vehicle you need may simply not be sitting outside.
That is the argument for arranging the car before you fly. A driver waiting inside arrivals with your name does not require you to have a local number, mobile data or rupees in your pocket. We meet arriving passengers inside the terminal, and the driver’s photograph and the vehicle registration reach you before the car does.
The road that does not get cancelled
The alternative to the flight is 635 to 650 km by road from Islamabad or Rawalpindi: the E-35, also designated M-15, Hazara Motorway, then the N-35 Karakoram Highway to Jaglot, then the S-1 Skardu Road for the last 167 km. It takes twelve to sixteen hours in good conditions and most drivers split it over two days.
That last stretch used to be the hard part and took about ten hours from Gilgit. It was widened from 3.6 to 7.3 metres at a cost of around Rs 31 billion and inaugurated on 16 December 2021, and the same run now takes roughly four hours. The published caveat is worth carrying: the project omitted certain safety features, and landslide closures on the S-1 remain possible.
If your dates are fixed, the sensible plan is to treat the road as the primary option and the flight as the upgrade, not the other way round. If you do fly, tell us the scheduled flight when you request the quote so a road plan can be held rather than assembled at an airport gate.
Altitude is not a formality
Skardu sits at around 2,230 metres and the valleys above it go considerably higher. If your itinerary climbs quickly after arrival, plan a gentle first day. Tell us if anyone in the party has a relevant medical condition so the driver knows before you set off, not afterwards.
Tell us the journey and we will price it. A submitted request is not a booking until availability, price and terms are confirmed.
The journey in figures

This airfield operates under visual flight rules with no instrument landing system, and the terrain means aircraft fly a narrow valley to line up. A pilot has to see the runway, so cloud, fog or wind cancels the flight even when Islamabad is clear. Cancellations are frequent in winter, common in spring, and fewest between June and August. Operators consistently advise building a buffer day. The 12 to 16 hour road journey is the option that does not get cancelled.
Every way of making this journey
We are one row in this table, and not the cheapest one. Here is what the alternatives actually cost and what each of them asks of you.
| Option | Typical cost | Time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fly in and transfer | Reported Rs 12,000 - 40,000 for the flight | 45 to 55 min in the air | Two to three flights a day in peak season. The fare range comes from a single third-party source and is very wide. |
| Drive from Islamabad | — | 12 to 16 h | The fallback when a flight cancels, and increasingly the plan rather than the fallback. |
| iDrive.pk, car with a driver | Quoted for your journey | — | A fixed price once quoted, a vetted driver whose photo and vehicle registration you see before the journey, and a car sized to your party and luggage. Booked before you travel, so it does not depend on having a local SIM when you land. |
Costs for other operators checked on August 31, 2026 and published from their own booking systems, official notices or named third-party sources. Fuel in Pakistan moved from Rs 264.61 a litre in September 2025 to Rs 343.10 by August 2026, so fares here move quickly. Treat these as a guide and confirm with the operator.
Which vehicle actually fits
Seat counts are the manufacturer figures. The passenger and luggage numbers beside them are what the vehicle carries in practice, with the cases people really travel with. If your party is near the limit, tell us the number of bags rather than the number of people, because that is what decides it.
- Suzuki WagonR 3 passengers, 2 cases Short city transfers on a budget. The tall boot helps more than the engine does.
- Toyota Yaris or Corolla 3 to 4 passengers, 2 to 3 large cases The workhorse. City work, airport transfers and the motorway run between Lahore and Islamabad.
- Honda BR-V 5 passengers with luggage, or 7 with almost none Family airport transfers on paved routes. The third row eats the boot, so it suits children or short hops rather than seven adults with cases. Not a mountain vehicle.
- Toyota Fortuner 5 passengers with full luggage, 7 travelling light Rough road and mountain work: Skardu, Hunza, Naran, Babusar. Ask for the diesel four-wheel-drive, because the petrol version is two-wheel-drive.
- Toyota Land Cruiser 4 to 5 passengers with full luggage Protocol and expedition work, and a genuine choice for Skardu and Deosai. It returns 5 to 10 km a litre, which at Rs 343 a litre is the honest reason it costs what it costs.
- Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin 13 passengers plus the driver The group and family vehicle. Gulf arrivals into Sialkot and Peshawar with heavy luggage, tour groups, weddings, long intercity runs.
- Toyota Coaster 25 to 29 passengers with hold luggage Large groups, corporate shuttles and pilgrimage travel. Worth knowing that the motorway toll alone is Rs 3,350 each way against Rs 1,430 for a car.
How booking works
- 01 Tell us the journey Where from, where to, when, how many of you and how much luggage. Precise addresses matter more than you would think, because a Rawalpindi address and an Islamabad address twenty minutes apart are very different journeys.
- 02 We quote a fixed price One figure for the whole journey, with the vehicle class it assumes. If a motorway toll or a waiting period is part of it, you see that too.
- 03 You see the driver and the car Before the journey you get the driver photograph and the vehicle registration, so you know exactly who and what you are looking for.
- 04 You travel At an airport your driver waits inside arrivals with a name sign. Check the photograph and the registration plate against what we sent you before you get in.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Skardu airport from the town?
About 9.2 km, so the transfer itself is short. The difficulty with Skardu is getting the aircraft there, not getting from the aircraft into town.
Why are Skardu flights cancelled so often?
The airport operates under visual flight rules with no instrument landing system. The approach runs through a narrow valley at around 7,316 feet and the pilot must see the runway, so cloud, fog or wind cancels the flight even when Islamabad is clear.
What time of year is most reliable?
Operators report fewest cancellations from June to August, generally reliable conditions in autumn, common cancellations in spring and frequent ones in winter. No published cancellation rate exists and we will not invent one.
How long is the flight?
Forty-five to fifty-five minutes from Islamabad. PIA typically runs two to three services a day in peak season, with fewer in winter.
What do we do if the flight is cancelled?
Drive. It is 635 to 650 km from Islamabad or Rawalpindi and takes twelve to sixteen hours in good conditions, usually split over two days. Tell us your flight details when you book so a road plan can be held in advance.
How long is Gilgit to Skardu now?
About four hours. The S-1 Skardu Road was widened from 3.6 to 7.3 metres and inaugurated on 16 December 2021, cutting a journey that used to take around ten hours.
Is the Skardu Road safe?
It is much improved, but the widening project omitted certain safety features and landslide closures remain possible. UK government advice for Pakistan recommends experienced local drivers in mountainous regions, which is how we staff this route.
Which vehicle do you use in Baltistan?
A Toyota Fortuner in 2.8 litre diesel four-wheel-drive form for most work, and a Land Cruiser for Deosai, Shigar, Khaplu and the higher valleys. The 2.7 petrol Fortuner is two-wheel-drive and is not the same vehicle here.
Can the driver stay with us for several days?
Yes, and for Skardu that is the normal arrangement. Multi-day hire with the same driver is what we would recommend for any Baltistan itinerary.
Can you take us to Deosai, Shigar or Khaplu?
Yes. These are the usual onward runs and they are best planned as day trips from a Skardu base, with Deosai in particular being seasonal.
Should we book a buffer day?
Yes. It is the standard advice from every operator working this route, and it applies whichever direction you are flying.
Is the quote fixed for a multi-day trip?
Yes, once quoted and accepted, covering the itinerary as described including the driver’s accommodation and duty arrangements.
Tell us the journey and we will price it
Send the route, the date, the number of travelling and how many cases you have. You will get one price for the whole journey and the vehicle class it assumes. If we cannot cover it properly we will say so rather than take the booking.
