Questions about this class

Do I actually need a 4x4 to get to Skardu?

For the main Skardu road, the Karakoram Highway and the town itself, no — those are metalled and a normal car copes. For Deosai and Basho, yes. Guidance on Skardu road conditions puts those routes in rough, uneven, high-altitude territory where a capable 4x4 is the sensible choice, while Shangrila, Upper Kachura, Shigar and the airport road do not demand one. Tell us the exact places you want to reach and we will tell you which class the route needs.

Is the Fortuner four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive?

It depends on the variant. Toyota Indus lists the Fortuner G as 4X2 petrol, the Fortuner V as 4X4 petrol, and the Sigma 4, Legender and GR-S as 4X4 diesel. So "Fortuner" on its own does not tell you whether the car can be driven off a metalled road. If your route needs four-wheel drive, say so when you enquire and the vehicle will be specified accordingly.

How much luggage really fits with seven people on board?

Very little. On both the Fortuner and the Prado the third row folds into the boot floor, so with all three rows in use you have roughly the space behind row three — around 296 litres on the Fortuner — which is hand baggage and soft bags only. Fold the third row and you get four to five large cases with five people aboard. If you are seven with full luggage, the honest answer is that you need two vehicles or a van.

Can I take this class over Babusar Top?

Babusar is a seasonal crossing and the pass is closed by snow for much of the year. When it is open, a diesel 4x4 Fortuner or Prado is a well-suited vehicle for it. Because opening dates move year to year, tell us your travel dates and route and we will quote the appropriate crossing — via Babusar or via the Karakoram Highway.

Petrol or diesel — which should I take north?

Diesel, if the route is long and mountainous. PakWheels quotes 9 km/l city and 11 km/l highway for the Fortuner 2.8 diesel against 8 and 10 for the 2.7 petrol, and the diesel's torque matters far more than that gap suggests on sustained climbs. The diesel variants are also the ones Toyota Indus lists as 4X4 across the board.

Does the price change once I have booked?

No. The price is fixed once it is quoted. If you later change the route, the dates or the vehicle class, we requote before anything is confirmed.

Who will be driving?

A vetted driver, with a photo and registration held on file, shown to you with your booking. On airport journeys the driver meets you at arrivals.
