The short answer on a Pakistan visa for Australian citizens: you need one, you apply online before you fly, and you should not book anything non-refundable until the grant is in your inbox. Australia is not on Pakistan’s visa-exempt list, and the Australian Government’s Smartraveller service states plainly that you need to get a visa in advance. The application runs through NADRA’s Pakistan Online Visa System, which says it is open to citizens of 175 countries and warns that applicants “must plan travel only upon receipt of a valid visa.” If you also hold a valid NICOP or Pakistan Origin Card, you are in a different category and may not need a visa at all.
The part most visa pages skip is what happens next. There are no direct scheduled flights between Australia and Pakistan listed at Islamabad, so almost every Australian arrival is a one-stop journey through the Gulf or South-East Asia, often landing after dark with 20-plus hours of travel behind you. This guide covers the visa, the safety advice, the routing, and a practical plan for the car that should be waiting when you walk out.

How the Pakistan e-visa works for Australian passports
A Pakistan e-visa for Australia-based travellers is not a special scheme; it is the same NADRA online system used by most nationalities. You create an account, choose a category, upload documents, pay, and wait for a decision by email. The portal lists five main categories: Visit (tourism), Business, Student, Official and Work, with further categories linked from there.
Pick the category that matches the trip
Most Australian travellers fall into one of three groups:
- Tourists and people visiting friends use the Visit category.
- Family visitors with Pakistani relatives but no Pakistani ID of their own also sit under Visit, with the host’s name and address in the application.
- Business travellers attending meetings, trade events or site visits use the Business category, typically with an invitation letter from the Pakistani company.
The category matters beyond the form. Your stated purpose and address in Pakistan should match what you actually do on arrival, and your hotel booking or host address is the obvious thing an immigration officer will ask about.
What to have ready
- An Australian passport with at least six months’ validity. The UK FCDO’s entry page frames the rule as six months after the date of your visa application; Smartraveller simply says six months. Use the stricter reading.
- A recent passport-style photo that meets the portal’s specification.
- Proof of where you will stay: hotel confirmation or a host letter.
- For business, an invitation from the Pakistani organisation.
- A card that works for online payment of the visa fee.
Wikipedia’s visa-policy page also notes that the online system asks for a Google-account-based two-factor authenticator. Set that up on your phone before you start, not halfway through the form at midnight.
Fees and processing: check the portal, not a blog
Pakistan’s fee and processing arrangements are not static. Wikipedia’s visa policy of Pakistan article records that a free, fast “Visa Prior to Arrival” route was suspended from 1 January 2026, with travellers now expected to pay a nationality-based fee and wait about 7 to 10 business days. Treat that as a planning estimate, not a promise. The fee shown on the NADRA portal at the moment you apply is the one that counts, and a sensible buffer is at least three weeks between applying and flying.
Dual nationals, NICOP and POC holders
This is where Australian-Pakistani families most often get tangled. The UK FCDO’s Pakistan entry requirements page says holders of a valid NICOP or SNICOP can enter Pakistan without a visa and stay for an unlimited period, and the visa-policy record lists the Pakistan Origin Card alongside NICOP as visa-exempt documents. The card must be valid on the day you land, and it has to belong to you. A spouse or child without their own card still needs a visa.
Smartraveller adds a point Australians should weigh: if you or your father were born in Pakistan, the authorities may consider you a Pakistani national even if you have never held a Pakistani passport. In practice that means two things. Keep your Australian passport as the document you travel on, and understand that if something goes wrong, the Australian High Commission in Islamabad may be able to do less for you than it could for a visitor with only Australian citizenship.
Mixed families are the classic trap. Picture an example household: one parent with a NICOP, the other with an Australian passport only, two children born in Melbourne. The NICOP holder needs no visa; everyone else does, unless the children have their own valid cards. Check each traveller separately.
Smartraveller Pakistan advice: what the levels mean
The Smartraveller Pakistan page sets the overall advice at “reconsider your need to travel”, citing a volatile security situation, terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime and the potential for civil unrest. Some areas sit at the highest level, “do not travel”. These include the border areas with Afghanistan and India, with Lahore, Wagah, Kasur, Narowal and Sialkot specifically excluded from that border warning. The capital is not exempt from the wider warning: Smartraveller records the November 2025 suicide bombing near the District Court in Islamabad’s G-11 sector, and expects heightened security and more checkpoints.
If you are flying on to relatives outside the main cities, cross-check the UK’s FCDO travel advice for Pakistan, which names districts precisely. The FCDO advises against all travel to Balochistan, to areas within 10 miles of the Afghan border or the Line of Control, and to many Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts including Peshawar. It advises against all but essential travel to the rest of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, to Sindh north of and including Nawabshah, to Dera Ghazi Khan, and to areas within five miles of the Indian border. Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore are not on either list.
Two consequences follow for planning. First, check that your travel insurance still covers you at the advice level for every place on your itinerary, because many policies exclude “do not travel” areas. Second, if a relative’s town falls in a restricted zone, the answer is not a cleverer car booking. It is a conversation about meeting somewhere else.

With no nonstop link, the connection hub largely decides what time you land. Sydney Airport’s airline list shows Emirates to Dubai, Qatar Airways to Doha, Etihad to Abu Dhabi, Thai Airways to Bangkok, Malaysia Airlines to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore Airlines to Singapore. Schedules change by season, so this table is about structure, not timings. Check your own ticket rather than trusting a pattern: a long first leg out of Australia plus a layover of any length can easily put the final landing late in the evening or in the small hours. Read your ticket in local time
Your booking shows the arrival in Pakistan Standard Time. Passing that line straight to a driver avoids the most common mix-up, which is someone converting from Sydney or Perth time and arriving a day early or late. Past midnight, write the date out in full: “arriving 01:40 on Saturday 14th” leaves no room for doubt.
A late night arrival at Islamabad airport: the ground plan
Islamabad International Airport is not in Islamabad. It sits in the Fateh Jang area, about 25 km south-west of the city and roughly the same distance from Saddar in Rawalpindi. It opened fully in May 2018 with 42 immigration counters, and a metrobus service has linked it with the twin cities since April 2022. After a 20-hour journey with family and luggage, though, the metrobus is rarely the realistic option at 2am. The question is how the car finds you.
Where to meet
Agree a named meeting point before you fly and write it into the booking notes. The two sensible choices are the public arrivals hall immediately after customs, where drivers wait with a name board, or a specific numbered pillar or exit door that the driver confirms in writing. “Outside” is not a meeting point. Waiting time
Long-haul arrivals take longer to clear than people expect. You join the immigration queue behind everyone else from your flight, and if two widebodies land together the hall fills fast. Then there is baggage, and possibly a lost-bag desk. When you arrange the car, ask three things in writing:
- How many minutes of free waiting are included after the actual (not scheduled) landing time.
- What happens if your flight is delayed by hours, or lands the next day after a missed connection.
- What the charge is, if any, once the included wait runs out.
A careful operator will ask for your flight number so it can follow the real landing time. Give it, and give the connecting flight number too, not the Australian leg.
Contact that works at 2am
Your Australian SIM may or may not roam cleanly on landing, and airport Wi-Fi can need a local number for a code. Before departure, set up at least two channels: a WhatsApp number for the driver or dispatcher, plus a phone number for a relative in Pakistan who can relay messages. Save the driver’s name and vehicle registration offline, not just in an email you cannot open without data. Which vehicle after 20-plus hours
Match the car to bags, not just seats. Long-haul visitors tend to carry large checked cases, gifts for family and sometimes a folded pram. A saloon that “seats four” rarely swallows four people and four big suitcases. As a rough frame:
- One or two adults, standard luggage: a saloon is usually fine.
- Family of four with large cases: think SUV or a people carrier.
- Extended family or wedding group: a van, or two cars that travel together.
State child-seat needs at the booking stage. Do not assume one will appear unless it has been confirmed.
Late arrivals at Lahore

Paying in AUD or PKR
Pakistan’s currency is the rupee, and Smartraveller describes the country as primarily cash-based. It adds that US dollars and euros are the easiest currencies to change, which tells you something about Australian dollars: they are not the first choice at a local exchange counter. ATMs are available in urban areas, Smartraveller says, though card fraud does occur, and credit cards are mostly accepted at international hotels and some shops in major centres.
For a pre-arranged car, the decision is less about exchange rates than about clarity. The trade-offs look like this:

Whatever you choose, get the total in writing, with what it covers: waiting time, tolls, parking and any night surcharge. Ask whether the figure is an estimate or confirmed, and in which currency it is set. A quote that quietly changes currency between the first message and the invoice is the thing to avoid. Keep a small float of rupees for porters and incidentals once you can reach an airport ATM or exchange counter.
The late-arrival checklist
Run through this in the week before you fly. Anything you cannot tick is a gap worth closing while you still have home Wi-Fi.
Documents
- Visa grant printed and saved offline, or a valid NICOP or POC for each traveller who uses one.
- Passport valid for at least six months, stamped on entry. The FCDO specifically advises making sure yours is stamped.
- Vaccination records to hand. Smartraveller notes a Health Declaration Form on arrival and possible screening for mpox symptoms, and the FCDO mentions yellow fever and, in some circumstances, polio certificates.
- Hotel or host address written in full, for immigration and for the driver.
